A powerful new planeswalker is joining the multiverse in a new Magic: The Gathering comic series from BOOM! Studios. While the world's most popular trading card game has many strong characters, the series' newest planeswalker is so powerful they have the ability to destroy, or save, entire planes of existence.

Though MTG is no stranger to the world of comic books, the latest series began only last year. The simply titled Magic by Jed MacKay and Ig Guara has followed its own version of the multiverse, ever so slightly different than the main series. While the first arc of Magic followed three of Ravnica's Guildmaster planeswalkers, the plot quickly grew into one that threatened all planes of existence. While the main comic series is now starting an entirely new arc starring newer planeswalker Niko Aris as well as returning classics Chandra and Garruk, a spinoff was just announced that focuses on fan-favorite necromancer Liliana Vess.

Coming from writer Mairghread Scott, artist Fabiana Mascolo, colorist Goliana Martinelli, and letterer Ed Dukeshire is Magic: The Hidden Planeswalker. The four-issue series stars Liliana Vess as she travels to Strixhaven, presumably to adopt her Professor Onyx persona from the main continuity. There, she feels the cries of a faraway planeswalker powerful enough to obliterate or save planes. Unfortunately, the search for this new planeswalker will put her in opposition to the insidious Tezzeret. The new series starts in April and will kick off with a series of covers. The main cover comes from Karen S. Darboe, with a series of connecting variant covers by Miguel Mercado. Additional variant covers will be done by Awanqi, Yanick Paquette, and Junggeun Yoon. Perhaps the most intriguing hook of this new series is the promise of an incredibly powerful new planeswalker. Planeswalkers have been more prominent than ever over in the game, so it's interesting to see whether this new character will migrate over to main continuity. Regardless of that prospect though, this new comic stands on its own merits. BOOM! has done a great job exploring MTG's planeswalkers over in Magic, with writing that really understands the characters, so it'll be interesting to see that attention to detail applied to Liliana with her own series.

By both revisiting old concepts and introducing new ones, BOOM!'s take on the Magic multiverse is refreshing to say the least. Fans of the game eager to see Liliana meet a powerful new planeswalker can find Magic: The Hidden Planeswalker #1 when it premiers in April 2022 from BOOM! Studios.
