A new Ms. Marvel trailer showcases more of Kamala Khan's new cosmic powers. With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally hitting theaters and Moon Knight wrapping up on Disney+, Marvel Studios has now begun to shift focus to the next installment in the MCU, Ms. Marvel. The series focuses on Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American high school student who finds a magical artifact that gives her cosmic superpowers.

The character is a relatively new addition to the Marvel Universe after debuting in 2014, but she has gained a loyal and passionate fanbase and her show has been highly anticipated. The series has already undergone a certain amount of scrutiny with the decision to change her powers, which in the comics are elongation that allows her to alter any part of her body mass and is derived from her Inhuman DNA. The series has opted to change it to an artifact that gives her cosmic powers but still allows her to create her signature giant fist like in the comics. This change, like the change to organic web-shooters in 2002's Spider-Man, has led to a certain amount of criticism.

Just one month before the premiere of Ms. MarvelMarvel Studios dropped the latest trailer for the Disney+ series that showcases more of Ms. Marvel's power. The 30-second trailer highlights Kamala's powers derived from a bangle that allows her to create offensive weapons and also defensive shields as she appears to be covering someone from being hit by a bus. The trailer also puts a spotlight on Kamala's family, particularly her mother played by Zenobia Shroff (The Big Sick).

The Ms. Marvel trailer seems to indicate the series will be an origin story of a character discovering and testing out her powers similar to the first Iron Man or Ant-Man movies and will be the first time the MCU has done a straightforward origin story since Doctor Strange was released back in 2016. Many recent MCU entries like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Moon Knight, and Captain Marvel have started in media res with the heroes' origin being established in the past and cluing the audiences in with flashbacks. This back to basics approach to telling an origin story for Ms. Marvel will be a way to distinguish and separate her from many of the recent heroes and show what makes her unique compared to someone like Captain America.

Disney and Marvel Studios seem to have great confidence in Ms. Marvel. The series has been given the same release window as Loki, which was the most-watched MCU series on Disney+. Ms. Marvel is being positioned as a fun, breezy summer program and is also being released between Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder. Even before the credits roll, audiences know Kamala Khan will return as the character is already slated to appear in The Marvels alongside Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau, which is set for release over a year after Ms. Marvel concludes on Disney+.
