Marvel Fixes Ms. Marvel's Biggest MCU Continuity Error

Marvel has quietly fixed a major MCU continuity error in Ms. Marvel. Continuity is the lifeblood of any shared universe; at its most basic, a sense of continuity allows viewers to genuinely believe the various events they have seen take place in the same universe. The Ms. Marvel Disney+ TV show handled its continuity remarkably well, with a tremendous number of Easter eggs in the first episode - one of which even confirmed the exact date the Avengers reversed Thanos' snap in Avengers: Endgame. However, even Ms. Marvel stumbled on one minor detail: the color of the Statue of Liberty. It was featured prominently in the opening shot and end credits of episode 6, but Marvel forgot that, as per Spider-Man: No Way Home, the MCU's Statue of Liberty is now copper.Surprisingly, though, Marvel Studios has now fixed this Statue of Liberty continuity error, as seen on Disney+. The change was presumably easy to make, with Marvel simply adjusting the color in basic image-editing software.

The change is a remarkable one, suggesting Marvel does continue working on shows that have already been released on Disney+, updating and - in this case - improving them. It's unclear when exactly the change was made; some comments online indicate Marvel adjusted the color over the Christmas period, but it's not possible to confirm that.

Statue Of Liberty Edit Confirms Ms. Marvel's Place In The MCU Timeline

This is only a small detail, but it's actually important to placing Ms. Marvel in the MCU timeline. The MCU's timeline is running several years ahead of the present day, a result of the five-year time jump in Avengers: Endgame. Ms. Marvel is actually set in fall 2025. The problem is that Spider-Man: No Way Home is set around Christmas 2024, and it revealed the Statue of Liberty was being renovated in honor of the Avengers. The traditional green color had been replaced with copper in honor of Iron Man, while a massive shield had been added to represent Captain America. The shield came crashing down during Spider-Man: No Way Home's final battle, but the copper color should have remained. Thus, the initial green color of the Statue of Liberty in Ms. Marvel contradicted the show's official placement in the timeline.

It's pleasing to see Marvel paying so much attention to the official MCU timeline, especially when this is such a minor detail, one that could easily be ignored. Marvel Studios is increasingly struggling to ensure the shared universe remains cohesive, a result of the sheer amount of content currently being produced at the same time. Little mistakes like these are inevitable, but it's clearly quite easy to make fixes after the fact, especially when the show is simply on Disney+, meaning the update now affects all legitimate copies of Ms. Marvel.

The Statue of Liberty is important for another reason, though. Like the comics themselves, the MCU is traditionally set in the "world outside your window" - a world just like the real one, only with the addition of gods and monsters. This is a deliberate creative choice, helping to ensure the MCU remains immersive to viewers. However, the Avengers: Endgame time jump involved massive changes, with half the living beings in the universe erased for five years. Now the changes are rippling on, with the Statue of Liberty serving as a very powerful symbol indeed that the MCU is not the same world viewers live in. Ms. Marvel's edit subtly makes that point.
