A new look at Ms. Marvel has been revealed and it may hint at a major change for the character. Ms. Marvel is an upcoming Disney+ series that will star Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, a teenage superhero who, inspired by her favorite superhero Captain Marvel, embraces her new powers and becomes a costumed crime-fighter herself. After her Disney+ series, Kamala will join Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau in the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels.

Ms. Marvel was introduced in the comics in 2013 by creators Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker, G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona, and Jamie McKelvie. The character is a teenage Pakistani-American living in New Jersey who discovers she is an Inhuman and has superpowers including elasticity, which allows her to increase the mass on any body part as well as shapeshift. The character has been a fan-favorite since her introduction and the release of her series has been eagerly anticipated and is set to premiere after Hawkeye.

In a tweet from The Marvel News, a new piece of promotional art showcases the best look at Ms. Marvel's costume yet. The costume is very accurate to the original comic, including the domino mask. However, the addition of what appears to be a purple energy source coming from her hand is not from any comic and could suggest a major change to the character.

The purple item on Ms. Marvel's hand could suggest a change to her powerset for the series. It appears to be an energy source, similar to what Captain Marvel projects from her hands. Given that both Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau are superheroes with energy-based powers, Marvel Studios could be trying to make Ms. Marvel more closely fit with her fellow Marvels. While it is energy-based, it could still allow her to create constructs similar to Green Lantern from DC Comics, allowing Ms. Marvel to maintain her comics powers while also making her fit more closely with the heroes she will be fighting alongside on the big screen.

The change could come from Marvel needing to make Kamala fit within the pre-established mythology of the MCU. Given Kamala's Inhuman origin in the comics, and the ABC Inhumans series mainly being ignored by the rest of Marvel Studios the character could need a different background. Ms. Marvel could have ties to the Eternals or be the introduction to mutants into the MCU. Given her close ties to Captain Marvel and the nature of her power, the purple energy could also be a Kree weapon. Marvel making such a big change to Ms. Marvel's origins and powers could alienate some who prefer the comic version, but the comic accurate costume may be Marvel's way of splitting the difference. It seems like Ms. Marvel will honor the look of the character even if her power set is changed.
