Promotional material for Ms. Marvel has been revealed that showcases a major change to the character's power. Kamala Khan became a fan-favorite character shortly after her debut in the comics in 2014. While a relatively recent character, it was no shock when Marvel Studios announced the character would be joining the MCU with her own Disney+ series and role in the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels.

Ms. Marvel was originally set to premiere in 2021 but was delayed to 2022. The rumored premiere dates for Ms. Marvel range from February 2022 to the summer of 2022, given that Ms. Marvel's next appearance in The Marvels has been delayed to 2023. However, many wondered exactly how Marvel Studios would adapt Ms. Marvel given her origins are so closely tied in with the Inhumans, a concept that the film side has strayed away from ever since the poor reaction to the ABC series of the same name.

It appears that Marvel has changed how Ms. Marvel's powers will be visualized in the upcoming series. In a recently released merchandising image from Pyramid International, Ms. Marvel's power set appears to have changed slightly. The ability to change the size of her body parts is still intact, but instead of physically growing, she gives off a purple energy glow around her body part that increases.

Ms. Marvel Crystal Powers

There is no word yet on exactly how she acquired these powers, but given the change in design, it is safe to say the Inhuman origin is likely off the table. The first tease that Marvel Studios was changing Ms. Marvel's powers came in August 2021, when promotional material showcasing the costume showed off the energy power. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has changed characters' origins and mythos before, like dropping the Donald Blake concept from Thor or changing much of the Guardians of the Galaxy's history, but changing a popular character power and possibly their origin is something very different for Marvel. The glowing purple energy draws many parallels to Green Lantern, who is set to get his own series for Warner Bros. on HBO Max.

The change is likely a big disappointment for fans, as Ms. Marvel being an Inhuman, who themselves are experiments by the Kree Empire, was another way of connecting Kamala Khan to Carol Danvers, who also gets her powers from the Kree. It certainly raises a conversation on if Kamala Khan is defined by her Inhuman origin story or if she can still be the same character personality-wise without it. The power set may physically be different, but if it accomplishes the same goal, it may work for the Ms. Marvel series. After all, many protested the concept of Spider-Man's organic webs in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, but after the film came out, it became a part of the character's comic book identity for years.
