Ms. Marvel writer addresses whether or not the limited MCU series could receive a season 2. Since the launch of Disney+, Marvel Studios has been granted yet another platform to help expand the MCU through the small screen. Following the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, Marvel has focussed on some of the franchise's so-far supporting established heroes, with original Avengers like Tony Stark/Iron Man, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, and Steve Rogers/Captain America having ended their arcs. Now, the MCU is now also paving the way for the next generation of heroes, including Hawkeye's Kate Bishop and Yelena Belova, and Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel.
Even though Kamala has been featured in multiple animated projects, the teenage hero made her live-action MCU debut this week in the Disney+ original Ms. Marvel. Starring Iman Vellani as the titular heroine, Ms. Marvel follows the story of Kamala, a Pakistani-American teenager from Jersey City who has been a Captain Marvel super-fan for years. While wishing to be an Avenger herself, Kamala one day discovers she has superpowers of her own, setting her on a path to become one of the MCU's newest heroes. Ms. Marvel episode 1 aired yesterday on Wednesday, June 8.
While Ms. Marvel is currently eyed as a limited series, its chances of a potential season 2 have now been addressed. During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Ms. Marvel show writer Sana Amanat was asked about the status of the show's future beyond season 1. While Amanat confirms that Ms. Marvel was intended for a single season to set up the character's appearance in The Marvels, there are hopes for a Ms. Marvel season 2:
Exclusive: "I hope there are. I mean, it is laid out as a limited series for her to go off and do other things. It certainly establishes her [as a] hero. She will be going into Marvels next, so that's kind of there. I hope we get a Season 2 is all I'm going to say! I hope we're a part of that."
Ms. Marvel season 1 has a six-episode order, similar to other MCU shows on the Disney+ platform. However, as Amanat points out, after the events of her own show, Vellani is set to reprise the role of Ms. Marvel in the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels. Directed by Nia DaCosta, The Marvels will unite Kamala with Brie Larson's Carol Danvers and Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau. Given the writer's comments, it seems that the current plan is for Ms. Marvel to function as a standalone origin story for Kamala, but there may be room to continue her solo narrative.
Even though Ms. Marvel may only be planned for season 1, a season 2 certainly can't be ruled out. Loki, another MCU show that was originally a Disney+ limited series, scored a renewal and is currently filming its second installment. Similar to Loki season 1 when it debuted, Ms. Marvel has already been a critical hit with press and audience members, though Marvel Studios will likely be analyzing the ratings data before making a decision on its future. Depending on the events of Ms. Marvel season 1, there are a lot of directions that Kamala's story could go in down the road. As the show is set during Kamala's high school years, future Ms. Marvel seasons could explore how Vellani's new MCU hero balances her responsibilities as a superhero, or the fallout of the yet-to-be-released The Marvels.
