Ms. Marvel's release window has officially been revealed by Walt Disney Studios CEO Bob Chapek. Marvel Studios originally announced the Disney+ show for Kamala Khan back in late 2019 at D23. Ms. Marvel was announced alongside She-Hulk and Moon Knight as the second wave of Marvel Cinematic Universe shows coming to the streaming service. The original news came without concrete information on when the series would debut, but it was later revealed that Ms. Marvel was going to be released in 2021. That was before COVID-19 forced Marvel Studios and Disney to reshuffle most of Phase 4.
Production on Ms. Marvel has been complete for a few months now, which has left fans waiting for news on the series. Newcomer Iman Vellani will play Kamala Khan in the show, and Marvel treated fans to a glimpse at her portrayal with some early footage released in late 2020. It wasn't until much later that it became clear that Ms. Marvel wouldn't be ready for a 2021 release. This led to multiple reports about the series debuting in early 2022, putting Kamala's MCU debut several months ahead of her already confirmed return in The Marvels. Now, there is an official update on Ms. Marvel's release window, and it's even later than previously believed.
During Disney's Q4 2021 Earnings Call, CEO Bob Chapek mentioned that Ms. Marvel was one of the titles that will be released in Q4 2022. Disney's fiscal year runs from November to October of the following year. This makes July through October the fourth quarter of their fiscal year. Based on that information and Chapek's comments, fans won't see Ms. Marvel in early 2022, as they'll instead have to wait until after June 2022 to see the series unless the plans change again.
The latest delay to Ms. Marvel's release comes after promo art surfaced online, seemingly revealing a new power set for Kamala Khan in the MCU. It has already proven to be a controversial decision for Marvel Studios amongst fans, but it is unclear if the reaction and possibility of making changes was any factor in Ms. Marvel's new release window. It could, instead, be a decision tied to Marvel's larger Phase 4 delays. Since the show is expected to set up Kamala's role in The Marvels, the Captain Marvel sequel moving to early 2023 might have played a role. It would make sense for Marvel Studios to hold the series until closer to Kamala's movie appearance, especially if they have other shows to fill Ms. Marvel's void.
Now that Ms. Marvel isn't coming out in the first half of 2022, Marvel Studios could potentially release both She-Hulk and Moon Knight before it. She-Hulk is a 10 episode legal comedy starring Tatiana Maslany and reportedly wrapped filming in August 2021. Meanwhile, Moon Knight is a six-episode action-adventure series starring Oscar Isaac and completed filming in October. It's possible that She-Hulk will be ready for a spring 2022 release, though, and be the big Disney+ event show after Hawkeye and The Book of Boba Fett finish up. Regardless, it now positions Ms. Marvel as a late summer 2022 release, which could be perfect for the younger demographic it could target.
