Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has explained that Ms. Marvel's powers in her upcoming television series are not exactly accurate to the original comic book version of the character. Following the conclusion of the popular Moon Knight series and the recent release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Ms. Marvel is set as the next installment in Marvel's massive shared universe multimedia franchise. The new Disney+ series stars Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, a Pakistani-American Jersey City high school student named Kamala Khan.

The titular hero originally appeared in an issue of Captain Marvel in 2013 before headlining her own comic series the following year, the first Muslim character in Marvel Comics history to do so. In the source material, Kamala is affected by the Terrigen Bomb, which unleashes a mist that unlocks the latent abilities hidden inside people who carry Inhuman DNA. Kamala receives the ability to alter her size, increase her mass, and shapeshift into other people and inanimate objects. Recent Ms. Marvel trailers, however, have shown Kamala using a different power set than her growing and shape-shifting powers from the comics.

Feige recently sat down with Empire and admitted that the MCU version of Ms. Marvel will have powers that are different from the original comic book version of the character. The studio head explained that due to the timing of the character's inclusion into the cinematic universe, Kamala's powers origin needed to be changed.  Read what Feige shared and check out a new image from Ms. Marvel using her powers, below.

“We adapt the comics; it’s not an exact translation. [Kamala] came about in a very specific time within the comic-book continuity. She is now coming into a very specific time within the MCU continuity. And those two things didn’t match. What we will learn about where those powers come from, and how they come about, is specific to the MCU. You will see great comic splash panels in some of our action sequences. If you want big, giant hands and arms, well they’re here in spirit, if not in stretchy, plastic-type ways.”

Iman Vellani as Ms Marvel

In the original comic series, Ms. Marvel has Inhuman DNA that grants her special abilities following contact with the Terrigen Mist that enveloped New York City and the greater metropolitan area. Although Inhumans have been introduced into the MCU with a brief eight-episode show in 2017, the circumstances that would lead to Kamala acquiring her powers have yet to take place. As a result, the Ms. Marvel series would need a new reason behind the origins of her powers.

Recent promotional materials have suggested that Kamala obtains her powers through special bangles enhanced with cosmic energy, an heirloom that's passed down through generations within her family. Although the hero's origins may not be the same as in the comic books, the bangles may still be comic-inspired as they seem to be similar to Nega-Bands, golden Kree bracelets that granted powers to earlier version of Captain Marvel in the comics. Whether or not Kamala's powers are exactly as portrayed in the comics, Feige promises that they remain true in-spirit to the character in the upcoming Ms. Marvel series.
