Warning: This article contains spoilers for Ms. Marvel episode 5.

Ms. Marvel episode 5 only contains a handful of Easter eggs, which is perhaps intentional given its place in the show's setup. In the comics, there's a sense in which Kamala Khan has always existed in the shadow of other superheroes. Even her code name, "Ms. Marvel," is a legacy one - naturally means she's endlessly finding herself drawn into Carol Danvers' orbit. The MCU, however, has chosen to subvert that.

Ms. Marvel episode 1 was packed with Easter eggs, largely because so much of it revolved around AvengerCon. The focus at that early stage lay on exploring Kamala Khan's relationship with the wider MCU, specifically in her being a major Captain Marvel fan. Kamala's world changed when she placed a mysterious ancient bangle around her wrist, activating a power that lay dormant within her bloodline. Since then, she's been on a quest of self-discovery, exploring her own history and heritage - literally in the case of Ms. Marvel episode 5, which features a time travel plot in which Kamala shapes her own personal family history. This approach naturally means the Easter eggs have reduced in number, and episode 5 has the least yet.

Although Ms. Marvel has plenty of MCU setup on the whole, it's increasingly clear that isn't supposed to be the focus at all. Still, for all that's the case, there are indeed a handful of Easter eggs in Ms. Marvel episode 5. Some of them are extremely important in terms of setup.

Ms. Marvel Episode 5 Accurately Retells The Partition

Ms Marvel Partition of India

Ms. Marvel episode 5 explores the Partition of India, a real-world historical event with enormous significance that is nevertheless rarely explored in popular culture. This saw Britain grant India its independence, but artificially impose, tearing the country apart along religious lines. The turmoil caused by the Partition is estimated to have cost the lives of somewhere between 200,000 and two million people, creating a generational trauma that does indeed still reverberate to this day. Ms. Marvel episode 5 shows Partition of India, with so many details matching up to the reality of the situation.

Kamala's Grandmother Is Named After Sana Amanat

Ms Marvel Baby Sana

There's a sense in which Ms. Marvel episode 5 is really the origin story of her grandmother. Sana is, of course, named after Ms. Marvel's co-creator Sana Amanat, so the name is entirely appropriate. Kamala learns she has been part of her own family legends all along, rescuing her grandmother from the chaos of Partition.

Ms Marvel Lightning Bolt

In the comics, Ms. Marvel's logo is a homage to Carol Danvers. The MCU's Captain Marvel has never had a lightning-bolt logo, however, so a new origin has had to be found - in a broken necklace, one that originally said her own name in Arabic. All the pieces of Ms. Marvel's costume are coming together ahead of the finale, with the outfit representing the piecing together of Kamala's own identity.

Kamran's Powers Appear Comic-Book-Accurate

Ms Marvel Episode 4 Kamran

The sealing of the veil causes Noor to sweep across the globe and grant Kamran superpowers back in the United States. In the comics, Kamran and Kamala are both Inhumans who were granted powers by the Terrigen Mists. The MCU has switched Kamala's powers up a lot, but Kamran's abilities look very comic-book-accurate - right down to the different color of the energy he projects. In the comics, Kamran's energy can flare across his entire body, metamorphosing him. It will be interesting to see how Ms. Marvel episode 6 uses the character; Kamran may become a mirror-image villain for Ms. Marvel to defeat.

The Circle Q's Fate Is A Spider-Man: Homecoming Nod

Ms Marvel Circle Q Explosion

Ms. Marvel episode 5 ends with a Damage Control drone, apparently malfunctioning, firing a missile into the Circle Q. There are amusing parallels between this and the fate of Delmar's Deli in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Both Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man: Homecoming prove the MCU isn't a particularly safe place for ordinary people - and Damage Control isn't helping.
