Ms. Marvel VFX supervisor Kevin Yuille confirms the fate of the Clandestines in the recent MCU show. Airing episode 1 earlier this year, Ms. Marvel chronicles the life of teenage Captain Marvel superfan Kamala Khan as she discovers her very own set of superpowers. The show is among a number of Marvel shows now on Disney+, joining the likes of Hawkeye, Loki, and Moon Knight. Ms. Marvel earned mostly positive reviews from both audiences and critics, with many praising Vellani's performance and the show's depiction of Pakistani culture.

Ms. Marvel is noticeably lighter in tone than most of its MCU contemporaries, but the show is not without its villains. In addition to contending with the drama present within her own family and the watchful eye of the Department of Damage Control, Khan also must face off against a villainous organization known as the Clandestines. The leader of the group, Najma, is at first friendly with Kamala, but the group quickly turns violent in order to secure Kamala's bangle, which will allow them to travel back home to the Noor Dimension. The Clandestines' last appearance in Ms. Marvel is in episode 5, when they crystallized and seemingly disintegrated in an attempt to secure Kamala's bangle.

In a new interview with The Direct, Yuille explains how they crafted the visually-stunning sequence with the Clandestines, and confirms that the criminal group is indeed dead. Yuille says the intent, from a storytelling perspective, was to craft the scene in such a way as to make it clear the group isn't just being warped back to the Noor Dimension, but that they are actually gone for good. Check out Yuille's full comment below:

As far as the crystalizing, that’s another thing that had gone through so many versions. There was this decision that, for storytelling, they didn’t want them to look like they were going back to their world. So, if we broke them up like hard light and they break up and they turn into these pretty little dots, it almost looks like ‘They made it! Oh, they’re home!’ So they’re like ‘No! We gotta make sure they look dead!’ It’s tough to do a shot like that, and you worry about looking cartoon-y, but that was for storytelling, to say absolutely, 100%, they did not make it.

The Clandestines looking up in Ms. Marvel

It's not uncommon in the MCU for characters to die and then somehow come back to life. After all, Avengers: Endgame brought back half of life in the galaxy after Thanos' snap in Avengers: Infinity War had wiped them out. Despite this, it would seem that the Clandestines won't be cropping up in any MCU projects moving forward. The Disney+ MCU series tend to feature less powerful villains with smaller stakes, and the Clandestines were no exception, marking a good introductory team for Ms. Marvel to face off against as she becomes accustomed to her new powers.

With Ms. Marvel next slated to appear in The Marvels, the Captain Marvel sequel movie, the hero will likely become much stronger as her journey in the MCU unfolds, likely meaning whoever she faces off against next will need to be more powerful. While the motives for the Clandestines were certainly easy to empathize with, the team would prove too easy to defeat for a more experienced superhero like Captain Marvel. Although Marvel fans would be forgiven for thinking that they may see the Clandestines again down the line, it would seem that the team's journey has definitively ended with Ms. Marvel.
