Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have revealed that they were surprised by Brie Larson's post-credit scene cameo in the finale. Larson has featured as the hero in three MCU projects before her cameo in the Disney+ series. Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani will star alongside Larson in the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels.

In a surprise twist following the credits of Ms. Marvel's series finale, "No Normal," Kamala Khan (Vellani) is seen resting in her bedroom in her family's home following her first adventures as a superhero. However, the young hero is soon alarmed when her bangle emits a purple glow, leading to Kamala being pulled into her closet's door and teleported away. Carol shortly steps out of the closet, seemingly swapping places with Kamala, with her hands emitting the same glow as the bangle. The post-credits scene was directed by Nia DaCosta, who directed the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel, rather than series directors El Arbi and Fallah. As such, the Ms. Marvel directors were surprised by Carol Danvers' post-credits appearance.

In an interview with Collider, El Arbi revealed that DaCosta had directed Carol's surprising post-credits scene appearance when working with both Vellani and Larson on the upcoming sequel. The director revealed that while they had asked Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige where Carol would appear, Feige had refused to tell them. As such, El Arbi and Fallah only saw Danvers' post-credits scene when finalizing the episode's complete cut. Check out El Arbi's response below.

"So, that was actually… Nia DaCosta shot that while she was shooting The Marvels...

We would always ask Kevin, “Yo, when’s Captain Marvel going to show up?” And he would always tell us, “Don’t worry about it. You’ll see.” Meanwhile, he has said to Nia DaCcosta, “Just shoot that scene. We need that. And you’ll see.” All of a sudden, when we were calibrating the final episodes after the credits, we said, “Oh. There’s Captain Marvel.” So that was a big surprise for us, as well. But it was pretty cool. It was pretty cool."

Ms. Marvel head writer Bisha K. Ali has also revealed that she has no insight into DaCosta's upcoming sequel, despite Kamala's involvement in the story. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant in June, the writer admitted that she is unaware of Marvel's overall plans for Kamala in the MCU, joking that this was due to her potentially spoiling it. With Ali only knowing that Kamala would appear in The Marvels without any insight into the plot, the writer stated that she focused on working on Kamala's introduction when writing the series, centering on setting up her character for future appearances.

Ms. Marvel's finale had many surprising twists that would have long-lasting effects on the MCU, from the truth behind Kamala's powers, to where The Marvels would pick up with her story. While audiences would expect a cameo by Carol Danvers due to Kamala's in-universe adoration and Vellani working with Larson and Teyonah Parris on the sequel, fans may be surprised to learn that El Arbi and Fallah weren't involved in developing the sequence. As phase four lays out the groundwork for the MCU's future, El Arbi and Fallah's recollection suggests that Marvel Studios may still keep many details about the future under tight wraps.
