Kamala Khan’s bracelet in the Ms. Marvel trailer hints at what her real role in the MCU will be. The first full trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series has made it abundantly clear that MCU Phase 4 is making some meaningful changes to Ms. Marvel’s story. So far, it looks like both her powers and origin will be significantly different from the comic books.

What’s been shown so far indicates that Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel won’t be the shapeshifting Inhuman that comic readers are familiar with. Instead, it looks like she’ll be a cosmic-powered superhero who wields a bracelet that may or may not be alien tech. Apparently, it gives her powers akin to Green Lantern that allow her to create and control purple energy constructs. It seems that her new abilities will grant Kamala a chance to live out her fantasies and be a superhero in the mold of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. However exactly what she’ll be up to - apart from teaming up with Carol and Monica in The Marvels - remain unclear.

The bracelet’s comic connections provide a clue about the role Ms. Marvel will play in the MCU. The abilities that the bracelet give Kamala seem to be the same powers that Wendell Vaughn’s Quasar picked up when he acquired the Quantum Bands. Like Kamala’s bracelet, they were worn on Wendell’s wrists. What this comparison suggests is that Kamala will get the MCU’s Quantum Bands. In Marvel Comics, the Quantum Bands were tied to a cosmic being known as Eon. Traditionally, they’re entrusted to Eon’s chosen champions. He’s had several over the years, but only one at a time. The person he picks to safeguard the galaxy is referred to as the Protector of the Universe.

It was explained in Quasar’s comics that the Quantum Bands are directly connected to this role. So if it’s true that the bracelet in the Ms. Marvel trailer is one of the Quantum Bands, it’s possible that Kamala will receive the same duties as Wendell and all the others. Whether she knows it or not, the MCU’s Eon may have secretly picked Kamala to be the Protector of the Universe. If that’s the case, this could help explain why she eventually joins forces with Carol. In the comic books, the Quantum Bands weren’t the only gifted bestowed upon the Protector of the Universe. Eon also gave his champions a power called cosmic awareness. It functioned a sixth sense that let people like Captain Mar-Vell and Quasar sense when the universe is in danger.

If Kamala becomes the Protector of the Universe and gets cosmic awareness in Ms. Marvel, it’ll be her job to seek out cosmic villains that threaten the universe. Thanks to the power, she’ll know when something is wrong without having to see it with her own eyes. Obviously, this is an enormous responsibility and one that could be overwhelming for a teenage superhero, but could still be the direction that the MCU decides to take with her character. If so, she could be counted on to save the world not only in The Marvels, but in multiple future cosmic adventures as well.
