Ms. Marvel writer Bisha K. Ali reacts to the show’s in-universe tribute to Black Widow. Ms. Marvel will feature Iman Vellani’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as teenage superhero fanatic Kamala Khan. Kamala will stumble across powers of her own during the series that will be reminiscent of the cosmic powers of her idol, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), and she will eventually take up the mantle of Ms. Marvel.

Ms. Marvel will focus heavily on Kamala’s story, but it will also be another new look into the post-Blip MCU. Avengers: Infinity War featured the MCU’s most devastating defeat for its heroes yet when Thanos (Josh Brolin) collected the six Infinity Stones and wiped half of all life in the universe. Then, during the events of Avengers: Endgame five years later, the remaining Avengers banded together to undo Thanos’ snap. Following Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.) invention of time travel, the Avengers split into small teams to travel throughout time and collect the six Infinity Stones. However, one of the Stones – the Soul Stone – required a sacrifice, and Natasha Romanoff a.k.a Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) traded her life for the Stone so that everyone could be brought back.

With Ms. Marvel’s release less than a week away, its promotional material is beginning to ramp up. A recent still from the series shows Kamala looking at a poster thanking Black Widow and Iron Man for their sacrifice in Endgame. Bisha K. Ali responded to the still on Twitter by explaining how important Natasha’s sacrifice is. See Ali’s reaction below:

Although Endgame was received very positively, one of audience’s gripes with it has to do with Tony Stark's funeral at the end of the film following his sacrifice to defeat Thanos. While Tony’s funeral is a heartfelt scene, it left many wondering why Natasha did not receive a similar send-off considering the two characters made similar sacrifices and were both members of the original team in The Avengers.

Although Natasha did not get a funeral scene like Tony did in Endgame, her sacrifice has still been felt across a variety of recent MCU stories. The post-credits scene of Black Widow offered a glimpse into how Natasha’s death was affecting her sister, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh). Then, Hawkeye pitted Yelena against Natasha’s best friend, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), whom Yelena blamed for Natasha’s death. Ultimately, the events of Endgame continue to ripple out through new MCU projects and it will be interesting to learn about Kamala’s thoughts on the sacrifice of such mighty heroes during Ms. Marvel.
