'Mr. Popper's Penguins' Trailer - Ace Ventura: Penguin Trainer

Mr. Popper's Penguins movie trailer

Mr. Popper's Penguins was one of the more family-friendly offerings that made it onto out Summer 2011 Movie Preview. The recipe for this comedy is pretty simple (mix Jim Carrey with cutesy animals - stir as necessary) but the results have looked harmless enough so far.

Now a full-length trailer for Mr. Popper's Penguins is out and it provides further assurance that Carrey is very much up to his usual wacky antics in this film - but that's what he does best, right?

Richard Atwater's Newbery Award-winning children's book is the basis for Carrey's latest vehicle, which features the Ace Venture: Pet Detective star as Mr. Popper, a "business-first" executive on the rise who's now divorced and doesn't spend enough time with his kids. Enter six trouble-making penguins that Popper inherits from his recently-deceased father to help fix that situation.

Co-starring alongside Carry in Mr. Popper's Penguins are the likes of Carla Gugino (Watchmen), Angela Lansbury (Murder, She Wrote), Ophelia Lovibond (No Strings Attached), and Clark Gregg (Iron Man, Thor). For some reason, Gregg isn't currently credited on IMDb for this film, but there's no mistaking our favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent when he shows up as a "villainous" animal control worker in this trailer.

Carrey is definitely on familiar territory in Mr. Popper's Penguins; the footage in this new trailer features the actor pulling off several physical comedy gags with ease (seriously, did he even blink after getting nailed in the crotch by that soccer ball?), making a wide variety of goofy expressions, and in general behaving in ways we remember from Liar Liar and The Mask. Few actors can chew the scenery as much as Carry, but he seems to have toned his shtick down so as to not upstage his real penguin co-stars - or maybe he's just mellowed out a bit in recent years.

Mean Girls director Mark Waters was at the helm of Mr. Popper's Penguins, which was also scripted by Sean Anders and John Morris (She's Out of My League, Hot Tub Time Machine). So it seems that the folks both behind and in front of the camera are keeping it PG-Rated this time around, which is good news for parents hoping to find a comedy this summer that they can take their kids to (sans CGI talking animals, a la Zookeeper).

Mr. Popper's Penguins arrives in theaters next month on June 17th.
