Phoebe Waller-Bridge has exited the upcoming Amazon Prime Mr. and Mrs. Smith series after creative differences with co-star Donald Glover. Ordered straight-to-series, Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a reworking of the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie starring film released in 2005. The action comedy followed Jolie's Jane and Pitt's John, two assassins who end up falling in love and getting married without revealing to each other what their actual jobs are. The film is infamous for Pitt and Jolie's chemistry, both onscreen and off, as the pair became romantically intertwined in real life while Pitt was still dating Friends star Jennifer Anniston.

The Mr. and Mrs. Smith series was set to star Glover and Waller-Bridge in Pitt and Jolie's roles, with both also working behind the scenes on the series. Glover, who is also known as rapper Childish Gambino, has an overall deal with Amazon and is still working on his hit FX series Atlanta, season 3 of which is slated to premiere in 2022. Waller-Bridge experienced her own meteoric rise to stardom after the Amazon debut of her hit British series Fleabag, which earned her three Primetime Emmy Awards. Waller-Bridge has gone on to work on major blockbusters like Solo: A Star Wars Story and the upcoming No Time To Die.

One thing Waller-Bridge won't be doing, though, is starring in the upcoming Amazon series. THR reports that the actress and writer has left the series over creative differences with friend and co-star Glover. The pair, who met on the set of Solo, remain friends, but the amicable split was a result of different visions each had for the series. Writing on Mr. and Mrs. Smith is ongoing and the series is still slated to debut sometime in 2022. A casting search for Waller-Bridge's replace is currently underway.

As amazing as it would have been to see Waller-Bridge in the upcoming series, the multi-hyphenate has a slew of other projects in the works. She's currently set to star in Indiana Jones 5, which is now filming, and the final season of Killing Eve, for which she is an executive producer, is currently in the works. Still, it seems that Waller-Bridge's exit is Mr. and Mrs. Smith's loss. While Glover will surely bring a level of talent and humor to the series, seeing the pair team-up was something that made the remake even more exciting.

The original Mr. and Mrs. Smith, while certainly not a masterpiece, is a pulpy and exciting film, one whose fight scenes have gone on to inspire shows like Marvel's Loki. The role of Jane will be a coveted one and it could attract another major star. With a 2022 debut planned, the role will likely be filled quite soon.
