Mr. Mercedes is one of the many recent Stephen King novels to be adapted for TV and film, but it’s also one that still has more stories to tell; it could get that opportunity on NBC's streaming service, Peacock.

Mr. Mercedes ran for three seasons on the Audience Network, and was one of the more satisfying Stephen King adaptations. Pulling from his three novels in the “Bill Hodges Trilogy”, the television series was able to faithfully source material from King’s books, but also remix them and craft a story that explores some original ideas. Mr. Mercedes looks at a grizzly serial killer cat and mouse-style thriller, but as the series goes on, it takes an oddly supernatural slant that reflects all of King’s sensibilities, for better and for worse.

Mr. Mercedes has become so memorable because it's unflinching in its approaches; the changes that the series makes are actually for the better, and get to push more of a Norman Bates from Psycho angle. Fantastic performances also help Mr. Mercedes stand out, but the amount of people that were able to see the show during its original run was minuscule because of it being locked behind the Audience Network, a now-defunct pay channel from AT&T. That’s now about to change as Mr. Mercedes becomes available to stream on NBC’s Peacock service. This distribution deal could also lead to even bigger things for the series.

The biggest reason that Mr. Mercedes’ move to Peacock makes sense is because the Audience Network is in the middle of dissolution. Curiously, a lot of its programming is shifting over to streaming giant HBO Max, so the addition of Mr. Mercedes to Peacock could mean that the new service has a deeper interest in Mr. Mercedes' future. Their revival of formerly dead properties like A.P. Bio and MacGruber could mean that Peacock wants to explore something similar with Mr. Mercedes. Mr. Mercedes was able to adapt all three books from King’s “Bill Hodges Trilogy”, but they took liberties in many ways. The final episode ends on a note that’s very different than the outcome of the novels in one major area. Mr. Mercedes season 4 would mean that the show could craft an entirely original story, perhaps with King’s input, and take these characters to previously uncharted territory.

It may seem like a natural point to end Mr. Mercedes since the TV show has adapted all of King’s existing content in the trilogy, but the show has gained a larger audience, and that number could become even higher with the help of this new streaming contender, Peacock. Mr. Mercedes season 4 would likely see Bill and Holly take on a new mystery, perhaps with the help of Bill’s daughter, Allie, now that she’s back in the picture. The most interesting hanging thread that can be followed up on is that Lou is still in a very fragile state, and experiences visions of Brady. If anyone will go on to perpetuate his crimes, it will be her, whether it's on a psychological or supernatural level.

The fact that she's taken over Brady's ice cream truck job is used as a bit of a visual gag as the season closes, but it's also disturbing due to what it implies about Lou's future. There are many television shows that feel absolute in their endings, but the existing series finale of Mr. Mercedes teases there could still be more, so it’d be satisfying to see Peacock give the show another season.
