'Mr. Holmes' International Trailer: The Man Beyond the Myth

Ian McKellen in Mr. Holmes

With his sharp mind, quick wit and ability to solve even the most difficult of cases, the character of Sherlock Holmes has captivated audiences for over a hundred years. This past decade alone has seen a number of different versions of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective in the movies and on TV. Jonny Lee Miller is currently starring in CBS' Elementary, Benedict Cumberbatch will soon return to BBC's Sherlock and a third Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey, Jr. is still in development.

But this summer's Mr. Holmes may feature the most intriguing version of the character yet. Based on the 2005 novel “A Slight Trick of the Mind” by Mitch Cullin, the film, written by Jeffrey Hatcher (The Dutchess) and directed by Bill Condon, follows a 93-year-old Holmes (played by Ian McKellen) as he attempts to solve the one case he could never figure out. Through his failing memories of the past and his life in 1947, Holmes comes to understand the mysteries of life and love.

A recent trailer for the film did a good job of summarizing the film's plot and cast, though the tone seemed to fluctuate a bit from mystery to adventure. Now composer Carter Burwell's haunting score returns for the new international trailer above, which is more enticing by comparison. In this promo, Mr. Holmes asks viewers to come along and solve the mystery of the man himself.

Along with concentrating on a particular case, it's been established that the film will focus on delving into the aging mind of Holmes. Perhaps more than a mystery film, Mr. Holmes claims to be a biography where we'll meet "the man beyond the myth." The character of Holmes in the film is the 'real' detective that Doyle based his stories on, without the iconic deerstalker hat and smoking pipe.

Again, more than a mystery film, it's a story about a man grappling with his own humanity and mortality. As a result of investigating a case from his past, Holmes gains a greater appreciation for life and the people in it as he nears its end. In a summer full of big budget tentpoles, Mr. Holmes aims to capture viewers looking for a different kind of punch - one emotional rather than physical.

Mr. Holmes opens in U.K. theaters on June 19th, 2015 and U.S. theaters on July 17th.
