Ocean’s 8/Ocean’s Eight (2018)

  • Rating: Not Yet Rated
  • -Genre: Crime

Debbie Ocean gathers a crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City’s yearly Met Gala.

This film is billed as a continuation of the Ocean’s Eleven franchise from director Steven Soderbergh that began back in 2001. The trilogy starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon (among others) proved to be very successful, grossing over $1 billion worldwide collectively. Ocean’s Eight looks to follow a similar formula, only with the spin that the crew of thieves is all-female. Sandra Bullock stars as Debbie Ocean, sister of Clooney’s Danny, and works with a crew of other criminals to get the job done.

Right now, it is unknown if there will be sequels, though that is likely if the film proves to be successful,

Death Wish (2018)

  • Rating: R
  • -Genre: Action, Crime, Drama

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures presents director Eli Roth’s reimagining of the classic 1974 revenge thriller DEATH WISH. Dr. Paul Kersey (Bruce Willis) is a surgeon who only sees the aftermath of Chicago violence when it is rushed into his ER – until his wife (Elisabeth Shue) and college-age daughter (Camila Morrone) are viciously attacked in their suburban home. With the police overloaded with crimes, Paul, burning for revenge, hunts his family’s assailants to deliver justice. As the anonymous slayings of criminals grabs the media’s attention, the city wonders if this deadly vigilante is a guardian angel or a grim reaper.

Death Wish first entered development back in 2006, when Sylvester Stallone intended to direct and star in the remake. He left the project months later due to creative differences. The film lingered until 2012 when writer Joe Carnahan came onboard, and he also hoped to direct. His version would have starred Liam Neeson and Frank Grillo. Death Wish picked back up again in 2016 when Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado were brought in to direct, but they left when the studio wouldn’t allow their script rewrites. Eli Roth became the movie’s director in June 2016, with production beginning in September of that year. Willis was chosen from a short list of potential stars that also included Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Russell Crowe, and Will Smith.

The original Death Wish grossed $22 million in 1974, spawning a franchise of four sequels that unfortunately saw diminished returns at the box office.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado/Sicario 2 (2018)

  • Rating: R
  • -Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller

The drug war on the US-Mexico border has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border. To fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver re-teams with the mercurial Alejandro.

This is the sequel to the hard-hitting crime drama Sicario, which was directed by Denis Villeneuve and released in 2015. Though the original was a modest box office success ($84.8 million worldwide), the enthusiastic response led to the creation of a followup. Soldado was first announced in 2015, and the plan was for the film to center around Benicio del Toro’s acclaimed hitman character. The creative team has described this as a “standalone spinoff” as opposed to a sequel or prequel, fleshing out the Sicario universe. Villeneuve was unable to return to direct due to his commitment to Blade Runner 2049. There has been talk about a third film.

Focus Features announced an official release date for the film in April 2018. The movie is adapted from the book of the same name by Stallworth and is set open in theaters in time to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the white supremacist march and subsequent protests in Charlottesville.

Superfly (2018)

  • Rating: Not Yet Rated
  • -Genre: Action, Crime, Thriller

This film is a remake of the 1972 movie, Super Fly. The original Super Fly was about an African-American cocaine dealer who looks to quit the drug business.

Super Fly is regarded as one of the most prominent blaxploitation films of its era. A pair of sequels to the original film were made following its success. Arguably, the property is better known for its soundtrack. The album actually outgrossed the movie, which rarely happens in the industry.

Filming on the remake began in January 2018.
