Black Panther (2018)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

The character of Black Panther was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, first appearing in Fantastic Four #52 in July 1966. He was noteworthy for being the first superhero of African descent in mainstream comics, breaking new ground in the industry. After appearing in other titles across the Marvel Comics line, Black Panther received a solo series that originally ran from 1977 to 1979. Marvel has since published numerous volumes of Black Panther over the past several decades.

T’Challa first appeared onscreen in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, with Chadwick Boseman’s performance earning positive marks from critics and fans. His standalone film was announced as part of the MCU’s Phase 3 slate in October 2014. Ryan Coogler was hired as director in January 2016 and filming commenced a year later. Coogler grew up reading the Black Panther comics, so he believes this film will be as personal as his smaller, more dramatic works.

Black Panther will return in Avengers: Infinity War.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

The second Anthology spinoff Star Wars story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley. Plot details are largely unknown, but the film will cover Han’s life from the ages of 18-24 and explore key events such as meeting his lifelong friend Chewbacca and winning the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian.

Han Solo was introduced in the original Star Wars film released in 1977, portrayed by Harrison Ford. Ford reprised the character in three sequels, most recently in 2015’s The Force Awakens, where he died at the hands of his son, Kylo Ren. Solo’s past has been shrouded in mystery in Star Wars canon, and this film hopes to shed more life on his earlier days before he became a Rebellion hero.

Rumors have indicated star Alden Ehrenreich signed a three picture deal with Lucasfilm when he was cast, so this conceivably could be the first installment of a standalone Han Solo trilogy.

Venom (2018)

  • Rating: Not Yet Rated
  • -Genre: Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

This plot is unknown. The film is based on the Spider-Man villain Venom and is believed to be part of Sony’s plan to build a cinematic universe around the Web Head’s iconic rogues gallery.

Venom’s first full appearance in the comics happened in 1988’s The Amazing Spider-Man #300 and he quickly became one of Spider-Man’s most popular foes. The character was part of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 in 2007, but the portrayal was widely criticized by fans. A spinoff starring Venom has been in development for quite some time, with first word about the project happening in 2007. Venom finally gained traction again in March 2016 and was surprisingly confirmed in 2017. Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer will helm, with Oscar nominee Tom Hardy portraying the title role. Principal photography began in October 2017 and wrapped in January 2018. Sony is going for an R rating after Fox experience success with adult-orientated comic book adaptations.

It is unknown if this is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Marvel’s deal with Sony to use Spider-Man in the MCU. Kevin Feige says it is separate, but Amy Pascal referred to Venom as an adjunct of the MCU. New Spidey Tom Holland is rumored to cameo, though that has not been confirmed.

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink: “Ant-Man and The Wasp.”  In the aftermath of “Captain America:  Civil War,” Scott Lang (Rudd) grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father.  As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne (Lilly) and Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas) with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from their past.

This will be the 20th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man. Scott Lang also appeared in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War as a member of Cap’s team. Ant-Man and the Wasp marks the first time a woman superhero serves as the co-lead in an MCU production, with Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne taking the mantle of The Wasp to form a formidable team with Scott. The film was officially announced as part of the MCU slate in October 2015, just a few months after the success of the first movie. It began production in August 2017 and ran through November of that year.

Ant-Man first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1962, in Tales to Astonish #27. Wasp debuted a year later in Tales to Astonish #44.

Pacific Rim Uprising (2018)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action, Sci-Fi

10 years after the Battle of the Breach, the oceans have become restless once again, but the Jaeger program has evolved into the next generation for the PPDC. However, something has reopened the Breach for the Kaiju and a Jaeger has gone rogue. Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, rises up to stand against the evolved Kaiju and the rogue Jaeger to prevent humanity’s extinction and preserve his father’s legacy.

This is the sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim, which earned $411 million at the worldwide box office that summer. Though the film underperformed domestically with only $101.8 million, the global total was enough to warrant a followup. Guillermo del Toro, who directed the original, had been developing a sequel since 2012, revealing in 2014 he was writing a script with Zak Penn. Del Toro had hoped to call the shots on Uprising as well, but progress on the project stalled in 2015 due to a conflict between Legendary Pictures and their new distribution partner, Universal. Pacific Rim Uprising ultimately may have gotten a green light because Legendary was purchased by the Chinese Wanda Group, and the first movie had much success in China. In 2016, del Toro revealed Steven S. DeKnight would direct Uprising. Stars John Boyega and Scott Eastwood joined the cast shortly after.

Tomb Raider (2018)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

Seven years after the disappearance of her father, 21-year-old Lara Croft has refused to take the reins of his global business empire, instead working as a bike courier in London while taking college classes. Eventually she becomes inspired to investigate her father’s disappearance and travels to his last-known location: a tomb on an island somewhere off the coast of Japan. Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who – against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit – must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.

This latest film adaptation of Tomb Raider is mainly based on the 2013 video game of the same name, depicting Lara Croft’s first adventure. The property was first brought to the big screen with a pair of films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Cradle of Life, which starred Angelina Jolie as the character. GK Films acquired the rights for a reboot back in 2011, but director Roar Uthaug did not come onboard until 2015. Alicia Vikander was cast as the new Lara Croft in April 2016, beating out the likes of Daisy Ridley, Saoirse Ronan, Emilia Clarke, and Cara Delevingne. Principal photography started in January 2017.

The Tomb Raider franchise was first launched in 1996 with the original video game for PC, PlayStation and Sega Saturn consoles and is one of the more popular gaming titles. More than 58 million copies of the games have been sold worldwide.

Ready Player One (2018)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

When the creator of a virtual reality world called the OASIS dies, he releases a video in which he challenges all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune. Wade Watts finds the first clue and starts a race for the Egg.

The latest film from legendary director Steven Spielberg, Ready Player One is based on Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name. The book was originally published in 2011 and received much acclaim, taking home an Alex Award from the Young Adult Library Services Association and the Prometheus Award in 2012. Critics enjoyed its nostalgic and heartfelt elements, with many feeling it has a fun and engaging narrative. Its story is noteworthy for making references to 1980s pop culture, including several movies Spielberg was involved with earlier in his career. Ready Player One‘s OASIS virtual reality also inspired the real-life Oculus system.

The film is set to have some clear differences from its source material. Spielberg has mentioned he is going to tone down the ’80s references (though there are plenty in the trailer), and Ben Mendelsohn said his character in the movie is not loyal to the version from the novel. The intent appears to be crafting a story that maintains the spirit of Ready Player One, but has the leeway to go off in its own directions if need be.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action

The best intentions often come back to haunt you.  MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong.  Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby also join the dynamic cast with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm.

This is the sixth installment in the long-running Mission: Impossible film series, which is based on the 1960s television show of the same name. The original movie was released in 1996 and was one of the biggest box office hits of the year, grossing $180.9 million domestically. Over the years, the franchise became noteworthy for bringing in new helmsmen for each entry. Brian De Palma made the first one, followed by John Woo, J.J. Abrams, Brad Bird, and Christopher McQuarrie on the next four. McQuarrie is the first person to direct two M:I films, previously calling the shots on 2015’s Rogue Nation.

Fallout entered development in 2015, with McQuarrie being confirmed as director later that year. Pre-production stalled due to a salary dispute between Tom Cruise and Paramount, which was resolved in September 2016. Production officially began in April 2017, but was forced to stop in August after Cruise injured his leg while performing a stunt. Despite the setback, the studio kept Fallout on track for its summer 2018 premiere.

Nelson) at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell) and Dash (voice of Huck Milner) to navigate the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life. Jackson) must find a way to work together again—which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible.

Primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson), a man who keeps people at a distance, shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth.  But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size.  To make matters worse, it’s soon discovered there are other similarly altered animals.  As these newly created alpha predators tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with a discredited genetic engineer to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.

This film is based on the video game of the same name, which debuted in 1986. In the game, players would control a giant monster to destroy cities while evading the authorities. Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the title in 2009 as part of their deal to purchase Midway Games. A movie adaptation of Rampage has been in development since 2011, with star Dwayne Johnson signing on to headline in 2015. Annihilation (2018)

  • Rating: R
  • -Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

A biologist’s husband disappears. She puts her name forward for an expedition into an environmental disaster zone, but does not quite find what she’s expecting. The expedition team is made up of the biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, a surveyor, and a linguist.

This film is based on the sci-fi novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer, which was the first in a trilogy. Annihilation is the second directorial effort by Alex Garland, following his Oscar-winning debut, Ex Machina. It is noteworthy for having a female-led cast, with the likes of Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, and others in starring roles. Though Annihilation is part of a series, there currently is no plan to adapt the other two books. For now, Garland made this movie as a self-contained story, leaving the door open for followups down the road should circumstances call for it. He also altered some things for the text, including the ending, to better suit the narrative for cinema.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action, Sci-Fi

In the conclusion to the Maze Runner trilogy, Thomas leads his group of escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission yet. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary Last City, a WCKD-controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all. Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions the Gladers have been asking since they first arrived in the maze.

This is the latest film based on the series of young-adult novels written by James Dashner. The first movie came out in 2014 and was moderately successful, grossing $102.4 million domestically. A sequel, The Scorch Trials, was released a year later and unfortunately fared worse – bringing in $81.6 million during its run. The adaptations represented Fox’s attempt to cash in on the young-adult craze that swept the entertainment industry for a brief period, building off the blockbusters like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games.

The Death Cure was originally scheduled for release in February 2017, but star Dylan O’Brien suffered injuries during principal photography, which forced the project to be delayed. Filming shut down in April 2016 to give the star more time to recover and cameras started rolling once again in March 2017.

God of War (2018 Video Game)

  • Rating: M
  • -Genre: Action, Adventure

From Santa Monica Studio and creative director Cory Barlog comes a new beginning for God of War. His vengeance against the Gods of Olympus years behind him, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters and must adapt to unfamiliar lands, unexpected threats, and a second chance at being a father. Together with his son Atreus, the pair venture into the brutal Norse wilds and fight to fulfill a deeply personal quest. This startling re-imagining of God of War deconstructs the core elements that defined the series—satisfying combat; breathtaking scale; and a powerful narrative—and fuses them anew.

From the marble and columns of ornate Olympus to the gritty forests, mountains, and caves of Pre-Viking Norse lore, this is a distinctly new realm with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods. With an added emphasis on discovery and exploration, the world will draw players in to explore every inch of God of War’s breathtakingly threatening landscape—by far the largest in the franchise. With an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before, fights in God of War mirror the pantheon of Norse creatures Kratos will face: grand, gritty, and grueling. A new main weapon and new abilities retain the defining spirit of God of War while presenting a vision of violent conflict that forges new ground in the genre.

Creed 2 (2018)

  • Rating: Not Yet Rated
  • -Genre: Action, Drama, Sports

Life has become a balancing act for Adonis Creed. Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight, he is up against the challenge of his life. Facing an opponent with ties to his family’s past only intensifies his impending battle in the ring. Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what’s worth fighting for, and discover that nothing’s more important than family. Creed II is about going back to basics to rediscover what made you a champion in the first place, and remembering that, no matter where you go, you can’t escape your history.

This is the sequel to 2015’s Creed, which was a spinoff of the Rocky film franchise that introduced audiences to Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Johnson, son of Apollo Creed. Sylvester Stallone reprised his iconic Rocky Balboa character and earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance.

The Rocky series started in 1976, when the original movie was a box office hit and won Best Picture at the Oscars. It was followed by five sequels, beginning with Rocky II in 1979. The third and fourth installments were released in 1982 and 1985, respectively, and Rocky did not return until 1990’s Rocky V. Widely seen as the worst of the series, its reception left a bitter taste in Stallone’s mouth, inspiring him to come back for one more round in Rocky Balboa, which debuted in 2006.

Creed was the brainchild of director Ryan Coogler, who pitched the idea to Stallone and got him onboard. The film saw Rocky move into a mentor role as he trained Adonis, who was looking to follow his late father’s footsteps and become a great fighter. Creed was a box office success and earned the best reviews the series had seen in decades, which prompted interest in a sequel. Coogler will not return to direct due to his commitment to Marvel’s Black Panther, so Stallone is handling writing and directing responsibilities. Creed 2 will see the return of Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago, the villain in Rocky IV who killed Apollo in the ring.

  • -Genre: Action, Sci-Fi

Visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY) create a groundbreaking new heroine in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an action-packed story of hope, love and empowerment. Set several centuries in the future, the abandoned Alita (Rosa Salazar) is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita awakens she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. Everything is new to Alita, every experience a first. As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield Alita from her mysterious past while her street-smart new friend, Hugo (Keean Johnson), offers instead to help trigger her memories. A growing affection develops between the two until deadly forces come after Alita and threaten her newfound relationships. It is then that Alita discovers she has extraordinary fighting abilities that could be used to save the friends and family she’s grown to love. Determined to uncover the truth behind her origin, Alita sets out on a journey that will lead her to take on the injustices of this dark, corrupt world, and discover that one young woman can change the world in which she lives.

This film is based on the manga Battle Angel Alita, which was created in 1990 by Yukito Kishiro. The original run of the publication ran for five years, ending in 1995. The series consisted of nine volumes and spawned various spinoffs, including Last Order and Mars Chronicle. A video game in the franchise, Gunnm: Martian Memory was also released. Two of the original Alita volumes were adapted into anime.

The live-action film has been in development since 2000, when a website domain was registered to James Cameron. Initially, Cameron thought he would direct Alita, but it was continuously delayed as the filmmaker decided to move forward with Avatar instead. In October 2015, Robert Rodriguez signed on to direct, with Cameron working on sequels to Avatar instead. Should this movie prove to be a success, there is the possibility for sequels down the road.

Death Wish (2018)

  • Rating: R
  • -Genre: Action, Crime, Drama

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures presents director Eli Roth’s reimagining of the classic 1974 revenge thriller DEATH WISH. Dr. Paul Kersey (Bruce Willis) is a surgeon who only sees the aftermath of Chicago violence when it is rushed into his ER – until his wife (Elisabeth Shue) and college-age daughter (Camila Morrone) are viciously attacked in their suburban home. With the police overloaded with crimes, Paul, burning for revenge, hunts his family’s assailants to deliver justice. As the anonymous slayings of criminals grabs the media’s attention, the city wonders if this deadly vigilante is a guardian angel or a grim reaper.

Death Wish first entered development back in 2006, when Sylvester Stallone intended to direct and star in the remake. He left the project months later due to creative differences. The film lingered until 2012 when writer Joe Carnahan came onboard, and he also hoped to direct. His version would have starred Liam Neeson and Frank Grillo. Death Wish picked back up again in 2016 when Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado were brought in to direct, but they left when the studio wouldn’t allow their script rewrites. Eli Roth became the movie’s director in June 2016, with production beginning in September of that year. Willis was chosen from a short list of potential stars that also included Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Russell Crowe, and Will Smith.

The original Death Wish grossed $22 million in 1974, spawning a franchise of four sequels that unfortunately saw diminished returns at the box office.
