Black Panther (2018)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

The character of Black Panther was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, first appearing in Fantastic Four #52 in July 1966. He was noteworthy for being the first superhero of African descent in mainstream comics, breaking new ground in the industry. After appearing in other titles across the Marvel Comics line, Black Panther received a solo series that originally ran from 1977 to 1979. Marvel has since published numerous volumes of Black Panther over the past several decades.

T’Challa first appeared onscreen in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, with Chadwick Boseman’s performance earning positive marks from critics and fans. His standalone film was announced as part of the MCU’s Phase 3 slate in October 2014. Ryan Coogler was hired as director in January 2016 and filming commenced a year later. Coogler grew up reading the Black Panther comics, so he believes this film will be as personal as his smaller, more dramatic works.

Black Panther will return in Avengers: Infinity War.

Ten years after The Battle of the Breach, the Jaeger program with its new set of heroes faces another Kaiju threat. Pacific Rim: Uprising is the sequel to the 2013 film, Pacific Rim. The movie is based on the story by the first film’s director, Guillermo del Toro, with screenplay co-written by Emily Carmichael, T.S. Nowlin, Kira Snyder, and Steven DeKnight who is also the director.

Rinko Kikuchi (Mako Mori), Charlie Day (Dr. Newton Geiszler) and Burn Gorman (Herman Gottlieb) will be reprising their roles, together with newcomers John Boyega (Jake Pentecost), Cailee Spaeny (Amara Namani), Scott Eastwood (Nate Lambert), Adria Arjona (Jules) and Tian Jing (Liwen Shao) among others.

The five Jaegers who will battle it out with the Kaijus have already been revealed to be named Gipsy Avenger, Bracer Phoenix, Saber Athena, Titan Redeemer, and Guardian Bravo. Gipsy Avenger, named after Gipsy Danger, has become the symbol of hope for humanity. Despite its Mark V classification Bracer Phoenix is built at par with the Mark VI Jaegers. Saber Athena is considered the sleekest and most elegant Jaeger created. Titan Redeemer is built to wreck massive havoc with its force and seismic Morningstar. Last but not the least, Guardian Bravo is designed for combat at range with its sophisticated proto-metallic Elec-16 Arc Whip.

Del Toro has been working on the sequel’s script since early 2012, and in 2014, he confirmed that he will be working on it again as the director. However, conflicts in production delayed the project. In early 2016 it was announced the project will push through with DeKnight as the director and after going through a couple of rewrites, the script was made.

The film is set for release of March 23, 2018.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2018)

  • Rating: PG-13

A continuation of the X-Men: First Class timeline that explores Jean Grey’s (Sophie Turner) transformation into Dark Phoenix.

The transformation of Jean Grey into a Dark Phoenix will be explored in the upcoming movie, X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The story is set 10 years after the events that occurred in X-Men: Apocalypse where Jean Grey was led into unleashing the full power of her Phoenix abilities in order to help her team defeat the ancient and powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur, played by Oscar Isaac.

The upcoming movie is not the first to explore the transformation of Jean into her dark alter ego. This had already been explored in the third X-Men movie The Last Stand, wherein the character of Jean Grey was played by actress Famke Janssen.

Ready Player One (2018)

  • Rating: Not Yet Rated
  • -Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

When the creator of a virtual reality world called the OASIS dies, he releases a video in which he challenges all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune. Wade Watts finds the first clue and starts a race for the Egg.

The latest film from legendary director Steven Spielberg, Ready Player One is based on Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name. The book was originally published in 2011 and received much acclaim, taking home an Alex Award from the Young Adult Library Services Association and the Prometheus Award in 2012. Critics enjoyed its nostalgic and heartfelt elements, with many feeling it has a fun and engaging narrative. Its story is noteworthy for making references to 1980s pop culture, including several movies Spielberg was involved with earlier in his career. Ready Player One‘s OASIS virtual reality also inspired the real-life Oculus system.

The film is set to have some clear differences from its source material. Spielberg has mentioned he is going to tone down the ’80s references (though there are plenty in the trailer), and Ben Mendelsohn said his character in the movie is not loyal to the version from the novel. The intent appears to be crafting a story that maintains the spirit of Ready Player One, but has the leeway to go off in its own directions if need be.

Jackson) must find a way to work together again—which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible.

Despite the extensive gap between installments in this franchise, Incredibles 2 picks up right from where the first left off, meaning there is no time jump.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action, Sci-Fi

In the conclusion to the Maze Runner trilogy, Thomas leads his group of escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission yet. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary Last City, a WCKD-controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all. Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions the Gladers have been asking since they first arrived in the maze.

This is the latest film based on the series of young-adult novels written by James Dashner. The first movie came out in 2014 and was moderately successful, grossing $102.4 million domestically. A sequel, The Scorch Trials, was released a year later and unfortunately fared worse – bringing in $81.6 million during its run. The adaptations represented Fox’s attempt to cash in on the young-adult craze that swept the entertainment industry for a brief period, building off the blockbusters like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games.

The Death Cure was originally scheduled for release in February 2017, but star Dylan O’Brien suffered injuries during principal photography, which forced the project to be delayed. Filming shut down in April 2016 to give the star more time to recover and cameras started rolling once again in March 2017.

Creed 2 (2018)

  • Rating: Not Yet Rated
  • -Genre: Action, Drama, Sports

This is the sequel to 2015’s Creed, which was a spinoff of the Rocky film franchise that introduced audiences to Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Johnson, son of Apollo Creed. Sylvester Stallone reprised his iconic Rocky Balboa character and earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance.

The Rocky series started in 1976, when the original movie was a box office hit and won Best Picture at the Oscars. It was followed by five sequels, beginning with Rocky II in 1979. The third and fourth installments were released in 1982 and 1985, respectively, and Rocky did not return until 1990’s Rocky V. Widely seen as the worst of the series, its reception left a bitter taste in Stallone’s mouth, inspiring him to come back for one more round in Rocky Balboa, which debuted in 2006.

Creed was the brainchild of director Ryan Coogler, who pitched the idea to Stallone and got him onboard. The film saw Rocky move into a mentor role as he trained Adonis, who was looking to follow his late father’s footsteps and become a great fighter. Creed was a box office success and earned the best reviews the series had seen in decades, which prompted interest in a sequel. Coogler will not return to direct due to his commitment to Marvel’s Black Panther, so Stallone is handling writing and directing responsibilities. Creed 2 will see the return of Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago, the villain in Rocky IV who killed Apollo in the ring.

  • -Genre: Action, Sci-Fi

Visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY) create a groundbreaking new heroine in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an action-packed story of hope, love and empowerment. Set several centuries in the future, the abandoned Alita (Rosa Salazar) is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita awakens she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. Everything is new to Alita, every experience a first. As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield Alita from her mysterious past while her street-smart new friend, Hugo (Keean Johnson), offers instead to help trigger her memories. A growing affection develops between the two until deadly forces come after Alita and threaten her newfound relationships. It is then that Alita discovers she has extraordinary fighting abilities that could be used to save the friends and family she’s grown to love. Determined to uncover the truth behind her origin, Alita sets out on a journey that will lead her to take on the injustices of this dark, corrupt world, and discover that one young woman can change the world in which she lives.

This film is based on the manga Battle Angel Alita, which was created in 1990 by Yukito Kishiro. The original run of the publication ran for five years, ending in 1995. The series consisted of nine volumes and spawned various spinoffs, including Last Order and Mars Chronicle. A video game in the franchise, Gunnm: Martian Memory was also released. Two of the original Alita volumes were adapted into anime.

The live-action film has been in development since 2000, when a website domain was registered to James Cameron. Initially, Cameron thought he would direct Alita, but it was continuously delayed as the filmmaker decided to move forward with Avatar instead. In October 2015, Robert Rodriguez signed on to direct, with Cameron working on sequels to Avatar instead. Should this movie prove to be a success, there is the possibility for sequels down the road.

A biologist’s husband disappears. She puts her name forward for an expedition into an environmental disaster zone, but does not quite find what she’s expecting. The expedition team is made up of the biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, a surveyor, and a linguist.

This film is based on the sci-fi novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer, which was the first in a trilogy. Annihilation is the second directorial effort by Alex Garland, following his Oscar-winning debut, Ex Machina. It is noteworthy for having a female-led cast, with the likes of Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, and others in starring roles. Though Annihilation is part of a series, there currently is no plan to adapt the other two books. For now, Garland made this movie as a self-contained story, leaving the door open for followups down the road should circumstances call for it. He also altered some things for the text, including the ending, to better suit the narrative for cinema.
