Putting Quentin Tarantino into the spotlight as a promising director to look out for, the film tells a non-linear story about the hopeless adventures of characters with lives marked by violence.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018)

Considered the best superhero movie of all time according to Letterboxd, it's no surprise that Into The Spider-Verse collects so many fans among the film community. The film counts with a distinctive animation style that blends 2D and 3D in a vibrant fashion, something that goes along really well with the colorful, chaotic nature of the spider-verse concept.

Furthermore, Into the Spider-Verse distinguishes itself from live-action Spider-Man projects by focusing on Miles Morales as Spider-Man, the young boy caught up in a dangerous plot orchestrated by Kingpin, who causes the spider-verse to collapse into Morales' world.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind has the perfect amount of absurdity, romance, and existential angst that are so distinctive in Charlie Kaufman's screenwriting style. The film manages to portray the seemingly unimaginable: the inside of someone's mind, more specifically, his memories.

In a future where people can undergo a procedure to have people removed from their memories, Joel decides to do the same as his ex did and erase her from his mind, ultimately changing his mind as the procedure goes on, forcing him to outrun his own memories. The film feels strangely real even with all its weirdness, and Jim Carrey nails in one of his best dramatic roles.

The Dark Knight (2008)

The reveal of Harvey Dent as Two-Face in The Dark Knight.

Superhero movies have a powerful fanbase, but The Dark Knight might be the only one so far that won over pretty much everyone. Taking a serious approach and working on the verge of its PG-13 rating to portray the Joker's violent tendencies, the film nails every aspect that a movie about Batman requires.

Easily one of the most popular movies of 2022, Everything Everywhere All At Once came as a huge surprise by addressing delicate themes such as existential crisis, love, and family amid such a chaotic narrative about parallel realities, martial arts, and hot-dog fingers.

The film also takes some time to pay homage to classic Kung-Fu movies that are still overlooked by the Western culture and the legendary Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai. The more fans delve into it, the more the title of the movie makes literal sense, as it manages to do so many things in such an innovative and entertaining way.

Whiplash (2014)

Whiplash - Miles Teller Drum Solo

Whiplash is the kind of movie that can easily put viewers in the character's shoes due to its intense pacing and great character development. One of the best movies about obsession for perfection, the film follows a young drummer under the direction of a ruthless instructor as they engage in an aggressive showcase of talent and anger.

The direction is flawless, and the performances drive the narrative with ease, mostly because of the gripping chemistry between Miles Teller and J. K. Simmons, who earned an Oscar because of his performance. It's difficult to even breathe in the film's final minutes, causing viewers to feel a mix of thrill and fear as the tension rises and never lets go.

Parasite (2019)

The only foreign film in the list's top 10, Parasite is also the highest-rated movie of all time according to Letterboxd's film community. One of those films that stick with the viewers for a long time, the South Korean Best Picture winner explores plenty of different genres with its playing narrative, moving from comedy to thriller and from thriller to drama at ease. When the movie reaches its climax, it's an anxiety-inducing mix of twists and face-offs.

The surprise element was something that definitely contributed to Parasite's successful word-of-mouth marketing, making it the perfect film to watch without prior knowledge about the plot.

Fight Club (1999)

Brad Pitt wearing a red leather jacket in Fight Club

It's funny to see Fight Club making to the top of this list, considering the audience missed the point of the movie back when it came out, while now it's so universally considered a masterpiece that people don't even argue about it.

Following an insomniac spiraling out of control and his rebellious companion, the movie presents the concept of a secret underground fight club for men to vent the rage and frustrations from their consumerist and run-of-the-mill lives, gradually escalating into an event of massive proportions. David Fincher conducts what's arguably a perfect thriller, made of puzzling characters, a slow-burn conflict, and a shocking plot twist.

La La Land (2016)

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in La La Land

The second Damien Chazelle movie in Letterboxd's top 10 movies with the most fans, the results show how the talented director is one of the most inventive voices in the film industry when it comes to mixing music and cinema.

Paying homage to the vibrant musicals from Hollywood's golden age, La La Land is a must-watch for any Jazz lover. In the film, an aspiring actress and an idealistic musician cross paths in a delicate moment of their lives. Struggling with their artistic careers and hopelessness, they form a powerful bond.

Interstellar (2014)

Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar

Throughout the years, Christopher Nolan has practically become a genre himself. His movies have a distinctive style and always take their time to deal with each character's drama, even in action-filled movies such as Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy.

In Interstellar, family drama is what moves the narrative and induces viewers to care so much about the characters. A talented pilot must leave his daughter behind in a desperate attempt to save Earth from a catastrophic fate, traveling across unknown galaxies and mysterious wormholes in a brilliant story about paternity and love balanced with a thrilling sci-fi story only Nolan could handle so well.
