Supernatural premiered on The WB network in September of 2005 after its creator, Eric Kripke, spent the better part of ten years developing and (unsuccessfully) pitching the series. Originally, Supernatural follows brothers Dean and Sam Winchester, brothers who hunt down the things that most people are afraid of. Over time, the storylines have developed to introduce more characters and more storylines for fans to fall in love with.

The series 15th and final season began airing in 2020, but took a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The series is expected to resume production on its final season post-pandemic, but until then, here are a few movies to check out in between binge-watching old episodes of this hit series.

The Others

For a television show airing on basic cable, Supernatural has a lot of really scary moments and great jump scares, in almost every episode. Fans who love being scared and love the subtle, yet suspenseful moments leading up to a perfect jump scare, will really love the 2001 film The Others, starring Nicole Kidman. In this movie, Kidman plays Grace, a woman with two young children who are extremely sensitive to light. Grace keeps her house dark for her children, which makes for a very scary setting.

The Craft

The Craft premiered in 1996 and stars Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True as four witches who, together, have incredible powers. At first, the spells seem harmless enough and the girls enjoy giving themselves and each other the things they've always wanted. But, when one girl takes her magic too far, things get dark quickly, people start getting hurt, and three of the four witches start dipping into black magic, causing the fourth witch to have to face her the other three on her own.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie

Before Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a hit television series, it was a movie, also created by Joss Whedon. Buffy is your typical high school girl with very not-so-typical superpowers.

Buffy has super strength that allows her to fight vampires, demons, and other forces of darkness. Dean and Sam would be lucky to have Buffy on their demon-hunting team. In the film, the title character is played by Kristie Swanson.

Ghostbusters

For fans who love the witty banter and funny dialogue on Supernatural, but don't love being scared, the 80's classic Ghostbusters is a good movie to add to your watch list. This film, directed by Ivan Reitman, stars Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Harold Ramis as parapsychologists turned ghost hunters for New York City. In addition to starring in the comedy film, Aykroyd and Ramis also wrote it with Reitman.

My Bloody Valentine 3D

Paranormal Activity

There is a massive fan base for Supernatural and loads of online forums where fans discuss the show and their own brushes with some pretty spooky stuff. For fans who love a good ghost story and the feeling you get when you hear a firsthand account of paranormal activity, this film is a must-see. The movie is shot through security cameras and home video cameras, giving audiences an eery feeling that what they're watching may have actually happened.

Cabin In The Woods

This is another scary feature from Joss Whedon. Cabin in the Woods has everything a horror movie should have, and then some, including Whedon's quirky dialogue and eccentric filmmaking style.

Fans of Supernatural will love this movie because of how much story Whedon manages to pack into one movie. It's full of twists and turns and the ending is absolutely shocking. This film is unpredictable, to say the least.

The Grudge

This feature film is based on a Japanese horror film from the same director. The Grudge tells the story of an old curse. Some believe that when a person dies in extreme rage or sorrow, a curse is created and anyone who passes through the place where that person died, is killed, creating a vicious, never-ending circle of death. The film stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Bill Pullman and is packed full of suspenseful moments and jump scares.

Crimson Peak

TH-Crimson-Peak

This American gothic romance film by Guillermo del Toro, stars Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, and Mia Wasikowska. Set in Victorian England, the movie is about a woman who moves with her husband and her sister to the English hillside. In their new home, this woman, Edith, starts seeing strange things. She sets out on a mission to solve the mystery behind the ghostly visions that are now haunting her and her home.

Friday The 13th

Jared Padalecki and Amanda Righetti in Friday the 13th 2009

Supernatural fans will love this 2009 remake of the original horror film because it stars Jared Padalecki as Clay. Clay meets a group of friends vacationing at Crystal Lake, but Clay is not there on a vacation. Clay is searching for his sister who went missing weeks before and was last seen at the lake. Little do Clay and his new friends know, but his sister is being held hostage by none other than Jason Voorhees who has come back to take more lives at Crystal Lake.
