Ah, the beauty of the highly-anticipated sequel! You fell in love with the original film a year or two ago, or possibly longer, and now you finally learn of the release date for the sequel. It's a great feeling that any fan is familiar with. It's a thrill, really.

Whether or not the sequel itself is a massive disappointment there's always this unique kind of excitement that we all feel when the trailer for the follow-up we've been dreaming about is finally released. Cheesy? Maybe. But when you've found a film that you absolutely adore and want that fresh excitement back again, the sequel can make you fall in love with the story and characters all over again. 2019 won't leave a lot of people wanting in the sequel department, either. It almost feels as if there are more sequels coming out next year than original or "starter" films.

We're certainly not complaining here. From campy horror follow-ups to highly-anticipated animated second chapters to a ton of superhero and comic book film continuations, there are enough sequels coming out in 2019 to keep our eyes and ears busy all year long. A lot of these sequels have been a hot topic for months now and won't be much of a surprise, but some of these sequels may genuinely surprise you-- especially those that are more possibilities than they are sure things.

Without further ado, check out these 20 Movie Sequels Coming In 2019 (And 10 That Might Be On The Way After That).

2019: The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Emmet and Wyldstyle in The Lego Movie

The original Lego movie was a surprisingly entertaining piece of work for both children and adults alike. The comedy was sharp, the animation was smooth, the celebrity voice actors were on point. A sequel was inevitable.

The second film will follow the aftermath of The Lego Movie in which the Duplo invaders have made Bricksburg into a Mad Max-esque wasteland.

Hardcore fans of the original film will be happy to know that the original producers, Phil Lord and Dan Lin, will be helming the follow-up. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part will be released on February 8th, 2019.

2019: Happy Death Day 2U

The first Happy Death Day was dark comedy at its finest, a perfect mix of hilarity and genuine terror. In the first film, the vain college-goer Tree, played by breakout star Hessica Rothe, finds herself in a dark Groundhog's Day loop in which every night she ends up being ended by a creepy doll-masked figure and must break the cycle. The sequel teases that her experience in the first film was nothing compared to what's next.

Happy Death Day 2U is slated for release on February 14th, 2019.

Possibility: Now You See Me 3

Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan, Woody Harrelson, and Jesse Eisenberg in Now You See Me 2

Who knew that a series of films about magicians/illusionists could get so dang popular? The first two Now You See Me films were quite enthralling heist thrillers and apparently a third film is in development.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer announced in 2015 that there were plans to begin the third film. Benedict Cumberbatch will be joining the cast and Neil Widener and Gavin James will be penning the sequel. Jon M. Chu will be directing the film. Currently, there isn't much more info out there on Now You See Me 3, as it is still in the scripting stage.

2019: How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

Astrid and Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World

The first two How To Train Your Dragon animated films were cute romps for anybody who seriously loved dragons as a kid. The third installment, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, will follow an adult Hiccup as he navigates leadership as the chief of Berk and the growing distance between him and his beloved dragon Toothless, who has found a rare but elusive mate.

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will release worldwide on February 22nd, 2019.

2019: Glass

Glass is a rare sequel that is actually a follow-up to two completely different films. We all remember the end of Split when the film's universe and Unbreakable's universe were revealed to be the same. It was only a matter of time before M. Night Shyamalan wrote a proper sequel.

Glass will star returning actors Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy, and Anya Taylor-Joy. Little is known about the plot thus far, but it is heavily implied that Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) is a master orchestrator. Glass is scheduled for release on January 18th, 2019.

Possibility: The Nun 2

The Nun Close Up

The Nun was a creepy prequel to The Conjuring 2's dramatization of Ed and Lorraine Warren's paranormal investigations and served as a sort of origin story for one of the franchise's scariest characters, Valak. The film had very mixed reviews, but many still believe a sequel will be in the works soon.

With Annabelle 3 in the works as well as The Conjuring 3, who knows when we'll see the return of this creepy demon nun? The ending of The Nun wrapped up the origin story pretty well, so this one may just remain a rumor.

2019: 47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter

Mandy Moore and Claire Holt starred in the original horror movie, set in the ocean's creepy dark depths, but the film's upcoming sequel is likely to have a whole new cast of shark bait.

In 47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter, five backpackers who decide to dive into a rarely-explored underwater ruin find they did not make the best choice when they encounter a giant angry shark. Possibly several. Who knows? We'll just have to wait and see. 47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter will release worldwide on June 28th, 2019.

2019: The Angry Birds Movie 2

A yello bird and a red bird looking surprised in The Angry Birds Movie

Moms and children alike were delighted in 2016 to hear that their favorite smartphone time-waster was to be adapted into a film about the true lives of the Angry Birds. They'll probably be delighted to know that a sequel is on the way with quite the mysterious plot.

While many readers may be rolling their eyes right about now, there is an exciting aspect of The Angry Birds Movie 2. The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack creator Thurop Van Orman will be helming the film. The Angry Birds Movie 2 will be released on August 16th, 2019.

Possibility: Untitled Alien Covenant Sequel

Alien: Covenant was hit or miss with a lot of viewers, both hardcore Alien franchise fans and casual movie-goers alike. On one hand. the film was visually and cinematically incredible to watch. On the other hand, the plot was generally considered to be a bit of a mess.

Regardless, it looks like an Alien: Covenant sequel is in the works. The yet-to-be-titled work (though many have been calling it Alien: Awakening) will be directed by Ridley Scott and it appears to be in pre-production already. According to Scott, the film's plot will end the Alien series and lead directly into the events of the first Alien film.

2019: Zombieland 2

Movies That Deserve A Sequel - Zombieland

It has been so long since Zombieland's release in 2009 that hardcore fans of the dark zombie comedy didn't think a sequel would ever happen. Fortunately, it looks like the film is officially in pre-production and has been slated for release on October 11th, 2019. Zombieland 2 will feature the original main cast from the first Zombieland film.

In the sequel, survivors Tallahassee, Wichita, Little Rock, and Columbus find themselves fighting off a newly evolved type of zombie. Other than that, we don't know much about the follow-up as of yet.

2019: Jumanji 2

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle put a unique spin on the original 1995 classic about an enchanted board game that can suck players into its world. It's hard to imagine anyone captivating viewers like Robin Williams did in the original, but Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart did a pretty stellar job.

While the sequel has been officially announced and given a release date, it is still untitled and the plot is being kept under wraps. However, the original cast of Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle will star in the follow-up. The second installment in the Jumanji reboot has an official release date of December 13th, 2019.

Possibility: Brave 2

Brave was a stunning Disney film with a unique story, and fans have been expecting a sequel for nearly six years now. Unfortunately, it's difficult to tell exactly what's in store next for the warrior princess Merida.

There's been quite a bit of silence on the production side of Brave 2. According to director Mark Andrews, he's very open to working on a second project if Disney and Pixar solicit it. Original director Brenda Chapman is unlikely to be on board, given Disney's history of changing Merida for a merchandise line.

2019: Star Wars: Episode IX

The newest installment of the world's favorite epic space opera has officially been announced and it looks like The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams will be producing, writing and directing it. Little is known thus far, of course, but it is officially going to be the conclusion of the new Star Wars trilogy as well as the Skywalker saga. The film will star returning actors Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, among others.

Barring any additional delays, Star Wars: Episode IX will debut worldwide on December 20th, 2019.

2019: Untitled Annabelle Sequel

Annabelle movie poster

The Conjuring universe has quite a lot of frightening characters. Valak the Demon Nun, the Crooked Man-- but none are quite like the utterly scary possessed doll Annabelle. We got the spinoff film in 2014 as well as the prequel in 2017, but Annabelle isn't stopping. Since Annabelle: Creation was a surprising improvement on the first film (which is quite rare when it comes to sequels) we can only hope this new Annabelle installment will be even better than Creation.

The still-untitled Annabelle sequel will debut on July 3rd, 2019.

Possibility: American Pie 5

Mr Levenstein and Jim in American Pie

American Reunion wrapped up quite a bit in the storyline of American Pie and one wouldn't expect a fifth sequel to pop up, but here we are, entertaining the rumors.

The status of the film is currently unknown with directors Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz rumored to be helming it. "That’s been sitting on a shelf at Universal collecting dust," American Pie star Thomas Ian Nicholas told Us Magazine earlier this year, "There’s been a script for five years. Jon and Hayden, who wrote and directed American Reunion, wrote it. Universal hired them to write it. I thought we were doing it the following year. That was the plan and then I didn’t hear anything."

2019: Frozen 2

Kids were so unbelievably obsessed with this movie when it first debuted in 2013, it's honestly surprising that it took five years for a sequel to be officially announced. Frozen directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck will direct the sequel and Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff will return to voice their respective characters from the original film. As of now, nobody knows what the plot entails, but we can guess it will involve a lot of singing. Like, a lot of singing.

Frozen 2 will premiere on November 22nd, 2019.

2019: Toy Story 4

Toy Story 4 Woody Buzz Jessie

The first Toy Story film in the franchise is a timeless tale that has stuck to Millennials' hearts through the years, driving us to see the new sequels each time they come out. Each sequel in the Toy Story series manages to impress as well. We can only assume that Toy Story 4, which is expected to release on June 21st, 2019, will be just as delightful as Toy Story 3-- hopefully without the hardcore tear-jerker scenes. We can't handle any more of that, alright?

Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack will reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel.

Possibility: Jigsaw 2

The Jigsaw doll in Saw.

It has been rumored that the production team behind Jigsaw is currently working on-- or at least talking about-- Jigsaw 2. The rumors come from an unfortunate divorce statement that went public between SAW franchise actor Tobin Bell and his wife that contained details about a possible ninth SAW film. The first Jigsaw film made enough money that it's hard for Lionsgate to resist another installment.

However, this is really all we have to go on thus far and Jigsaw directors Michael and Peter Spierig are not expected to return.

2019: It: Chapter Two

A follow-up to the 2017 reboot of Stephen King's It comes as no surprise. The first film followed the Losers Club as children when they first encounter the supernatural creature Pennywise, so it's only natural that a second film would follow the now-adult Losers Club when they discover that Pennywise has returned.

The new film will star Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, James McAvoy, James Ransone, and Isaiah Mustafa will star in the sequel. Bill Skarsgård will reprise his role as Pennywise in the sequel, as will the original cast of child actors. It: Chapter 2 will debut on September 6th, 2019.

2019: John Wick 3: Parabellum

Halle Berry in Casablanca in John Wick 3

First he avenged his dog, then he got sucked back into repaying a past debt, and now it looks like John Wick has to fight his way out of a hit that is placed on his head. The poor guy just wants some peace and quiet but can never catch a break.

While fan-favorite character Cassian (Common) will not be reprising his role in the third sequel, Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Anjelica Huston, and Ian McShane will appear in the film alongside Keanu Reaves. John Wick 3: Parabellum is set for release on May 17th, 2019.
