A new decade is just around the corner and with a new decade comes new movies, like sequels to the movies of the past. This upcoming decade is bringing a lot of movies from the last few decades along with it, such as old fan favorite horrors, comedies, and much more.
While it can be exciting to have old favorites make a comeback, some movies of the past should stay in the past. And some movie franchises just don't know when to throw in the towel and walk away. Here are the 5 sequels we're looking forward to and the 5 we're not.
Looking Forward To: A Quiet Place 2
Power couple John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are back again in the sequel to their successful thriller movie, A Quiet Place. The first A Quiet Place received high praises for its back to basics approach and old school horror movie style.
Fans who are hoping to catch a sneak peak of the highly anticipated sequel, A Quiet Place 2, will be relieved to know a teaser has been released, but there's a catch: it's only being shown with the new Black Christmas in theaters. It's a two for one special for horror movie fans.
Not Looking Forward To: Halloween Kills
The Halloween franchise has been terrifying fans for over 40 years. In 2018, Michael Myers was brought back to scare fans once again. But, unfortunately, many felt the latest movie in the series did not live up to the Halloween movies that came before it.
While others felt it was a decent attempt to revive Michael Myers, maybe they should just lay ol' Mike to rest. Two years after the first attempt, Michael is making a reappearance in Halloween Kills, which is set to be released on October 16, 2020.
Looking Forward To: Legally Blonde 3
It's been over 15 years since the glamorous Elle Woods last graced the big screen. Fans fell in love with Elle's unstoppable determination and optimism along with her fabulous outfits in the original Legally Blonde and then once more in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde.
Legally Blonde 3 is set to be released May of 2020 and while not much is known about the plot, fans of the franchise are still getting giddy with excitement at the thought of Reese Witherspoon returning to her role as the unstoppable and stunning Elle Woods.
Not Looking Forward To: Escape Room 2
Escape Room made its debut in January of 2019 as real life escape rooms grew in popularity. While it was a decent thriller with a few jump scares, many critics felt it was unoriginal and nothing to get excited about, receiving only a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Escape Room 2 is set to be in theaters in August of 2020. This could be a series that goes on forever like the Paranormal Activity, as its basic overall plot makes it easy to continually add on, but it will probably not make it as a horror movie legend.
Looking Forward To: Ghostbusters: Afterlife
Ghostbusters has been busting fans up for over thirty years as the original first appeared on the big screen in 1984. While the last revival of Ghostbusters that came out in 2016 left a number of fans of the original unsatisfied, the latest installment in the series might be able to turn the tables.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife which is will be released in July of 2020, if offering a fresh new perspective on the '80s comedy. This latest version is less of a comedy and more of a suspense with an all star cast including Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, and Bill Murray.
Not Looking Forward To: Minions: The Rise of Gru
Those wacky minions are at it again in their latest movie which will show in theaters on July 3, 2020. While the first few movies that came out in the Despicable Me and Minions franchise were cute, it might be time put these zany yellow creatures behind us.
Despicable Me brought minions to the world in 2010, since then there has been three Despicable Me movies created along with the minions' own movie, Minions. Those crazy little yellow guys were fun for a while, but now they're crossing the line into overkill.
Looking Forward To: Top Gun: Maverick
It's been over 30 years since Tom Cruise first appeared as Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun, but now he's back and better than ever in this new sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, which will be in theaters in June of 2020.
Fans are already beginning to buzz with excitement at the thought of seeing Maverick back in action. Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is making his comeback to mentor the new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots. There is no one more qualified for the job as who knows more about the danger zone than Maverick himself?
Not Looking Forward To: The Purge 5
The Purge franchise began in 2013 and now only seven years later, the fifth installment of The Purge is coming to theaters the summer of 2020. The Purge shocked and terrified fans when it first made its debut, but five movies and six years later, it's beginning to sound like a broken record.
The Purge is quickly becoming the next Saw, a series with a basic plot that will continue if it makes enough money. Loyal fans will continue to go to the openings, while the rest begin to get bored and move on to the next horror series.
Looking Forward To: Bad Boys For Life
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back in the long awaited third installment of the Bad Boys franchise, Bad Boys For Life. The latest release of Bad Boys will be in theaters January of 2020.
There's no better way to kick off the new years than by seeing one of the baddest duos back together again. Bad Boys first came out on the big screen in 1995, then again in 2003. Now, over 15 years later, fans of the series could not be more ready to see their favorite duo, Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett, back in action.
Not Looking Forward To: The Organ Donor
The Jigsaw Killer is back once again in the nineth installment of the Saw franchise, The Organ Donor, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock. Even though the last revival of Saw, Jigsaw, was not the success that the creators hoped it would be, it brought in enough money for them to give it another go. Saw originally came out in 2004 and now over 15 years later, number nine is about to be released.
After eight movies, most feel like Saw has been played out, but dedicated Saw fans will be at the theaters, watching yet another bloody and gruesome murder scene.
