There are a lot of movies that have things in them that make no sense. These plot holes often cause people to turn off the movie, and in some cases ruin everything about the movie for them. However, the idea of a plot hole is not the same as bad writing, or people making dumb decisions, and that is often a confusing point when discussing them.

A plot hole is not a character's bad decision, it is a case where the movie breaks one of its own rules. If a movie sets a specific rule and then a character does something that works despite breaking the rule, without explaining why it is a plot hole. If something happens that makes no sense based on the rules of the story with no reason, it is a plot hole.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

  • Streaming now on HBO Max.

In The Lost World; Jurassic Park, the story moved from the island amusement park to cities with countless people in danger. This sounds very familiar to what is coming with the new Jurassic World finale but on a smaller scale. However, the plot hole involves how the dinosaurs got there.

There is a ship carrying the T-Rex to the harbor. However, when the ship showed up, there was no one on it and the thought was the dinosaurs killed the crew. The only dinosaur on the ship was locked in a room, so what happened to the crew? Redditor No7e wrote, "I know there was originally plan to put Velociraptors on the ship, but the idea was scrapped, still the ghost ship is left on the film. That's lazy."

Predator 2 (1990)

Predator 2 took the alien hunters from the remote jungles to the big city where they found police officers trying to deal with the hunter. There was one thing that was set as a rule for the Predators in the first movie. Redditor No7er wrote that a rule changed in Predator 2 and there was no reason given for the change.

"It was established in [the] first Predator that when the mask is removed Predator cannot see in the heat vision anymore, but his own vision that is this weird red/black blur," he wrote. "This was forgotten as heat vision works without the mask now and I just can't get over this."

The Butterfly Effect (2004)

  • Streaming now on HBO Max.

The problem with The Butterfly Effect is the same problem that affects most time travel movies. In time travel movies, the rules are always changing and there are always movies that mess up one aspect or another of it. Even a movie that people enjoy can throw them off when the rules change.

In The Butterfly Effect, the theme is that changing things in the past -no matter how small - can dramatically alter the future. MrWedensday wrote about the scene where Evan is in jail and goes to the past to cut himself to prove time travel is real. "This makes no sense to me because as soon as he injures his hands, you enter in another timeline, and the prisoners should've always known the character with scars in his hands."

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

There was a lot going on in Avengers: Endgame, and with the crowd-pleasing moments and satisfying resolutions for Captain America and Iron Man, people didn't let the plot holes bother them too much. The biggest problem comes after watching Loki and that makes Steve Rogers's final resolution make no sense.

"If he went back into the past to start a life w/ Peggy, how does that timeline become the same timeline as the one he just left, considering that’s not how time works in this movie," noldoe41 asked. "He should have created another branch & been stuck there."

Blade II (2002)

  • Streaming now on Netflix.

The first Blade movie proved to studios that Marvel movies could make it on the big screen. However, the movie was more of a horror movie about a vampire hunter than a superhero movie. When Guillermo del Toro directed the Blade sequel, it was more comic book-like but had one plot hole that bothered some people.

Redditor charlie_echo brought up how a freshly-turned Whistler took his own life at the end of the first movie with a special bullet Blade had that killed vampires. However, at the start of the next movie, "The very start of the movie is Blade going to save Whistler, because the shot didn't kill him as he had already turned... If Whistler had already turned before he took the shot, his body would be ash."

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)

  • Streaming now on Disney+.

Even Disney animated movies are not exempt from people complaining about plot holes throwing them off. One that Redditor SaltySteveD87 mentioned was the 2001 release Atlantis: The Lost Empire. The movie shows that the Atlanteans live longer than normal humans and were there to save it after its collapse.

However, there was one thing that threw the Redditor off. "Despite not making any major changes since the collapse, they ALL somehow forgot their own language and needed an outsider like Milo who only had scraps of information to not only translate but actually show them how to use their own tech?

The Rock (1996)

Sean Connery in The Rock
  • Streaming now on Tubi.

The Rock was a movie that was all about explosive action, a genuine summer blockbuster. As a result, it was always a good idea to turn off the brain and just watch the exciting action. However, there was one thing that really threw some viewers, and it involved bringing in someone who broke out of Alkatraz to break back in.

The fact he is expected to get them in the opposite of how he got out was one problem. However, BONERSTORM wrote, "Take the ridiculous furnace scene. Connery says he learned the patterns exactly to roll through it. So he rolls through with expert timing, then he opens the door from the other side for Nic Cage. Only if Connery was breaking OUT of alcatraz he could have avoided the furnace all together by just opening the door."

Black Widow (2021)

Natasha Romanoff looking in the distance in Black Widow
  • Streaming now on Disney+.

Black Widow was a great Marvel Cinematic Universe movie that finally gave Black Widow the center stage for the first time. She opened the movie on the run from Thaddeus Ross and the U.S. Government and then ended up fighting the evil Red Room.

After all the Black Widow action, the end had a moment that made it seem like an entire scene was missing. ApexInTheRough asked, "How did Natasha get away from Ross at the end of the Black Widow movie?!" That saw Ross close in on her and she was there ready to turn herself in. However, in the post-credit scene, she was still free with no reason given.

Ant-Man (2015)

  • Streaming now on Disney+.

Ant-Man gave MCU fans a lighter comic book movie, as it was a heist movie that had Paul Rudd starring as Scott Lang in what was also a comedy compared with other MCU movies. This made it easy to just let most things go, but there was one thing that bothered spd1327 on Reddit.

It was all a problem of physics that Ant-Man got wrong - specifically, those that broke the rules the movie set for itself. They wrote, "they specifically say early in the movie that his mass won’t change, only the space between his molecules. So he’d always weigh 200lbs. Later on in the same movie Hank Pym has a freaking tank on his keychain."

Gravity (2013)

  • Available to rent on Apple TV, Prime Video

Another movie that bothered people for its physics was Gravity. Unlike Ant-Man, this was an Oscar-winning movie and had a strong script and directorial style that made it one of the best critically acclaimed movies of the year. However, the scene where George Clooney's character was lost in space bothered a lot of people.

Redditor rahultg_ wrote that the movie had "so many mistakes" and then focused on this one moment. "The one that stands out is George Clooney floating away at rapid speed after he detaches himself from Sandra Bullock. That just doesn't happen. He'll still be going be going at the same speed as he was before. Who tf is pushing him away?"
