David Duchovny is a Phantom, Warren Beatty’s Howard Hughes movie is paramount for New Regency; Antoine Fuqua takes aim at Hunter Killer; Dwayne Johnson and Susan Sarandon Snitch and Gary Oldman may be Smiley all the way to the bank with a Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy franchise.
1. David Duchovny will join his Californication co-star Natascha McElhone in the Cold War submarine thriller Phantom.
According to Variety:
The former X-Files star replaces Andy Garcia in the film, which also stars Ed Harris and William Fichtner. Todd Robinson writes and directs with John Watson, Pen Densham, Julian Adams, Rui Costa Reis and Eliad Josephson producing.
Duchovny is a vastly under-rated actor, while McElhone, Harris and Fichtner always offer great support, so this is one to watch. However, I get the feeling that it won’t bust any blocks.
2. Warren Beatty has announced that his latest movie has moved from Paramount Pictures to New Regency.
The project , Beatty’s long gestating Howard Hughes film was announced as a Paramount picture in June, but now the Fox based Regency has taken up funding.
Alec Baldwin and Jack Nicholson are said to be interested in starring alongside Beatty (playing Hughes), who will also write, direct and produce.

3. Antoine Fuqua is in final negotiations to take the helm of Relativity Media's troubled Hunter Killer.
“Based on the novel "Firing Point" by George Wallace and Don Keith, story follows an untested submarine captain who must work with a Navy SEAL team to rescue Russia's president, taken prisoner during a military coup. The two sides team to stop a rogue Russian general from igniting World War III.”
Salt director Phillip Noyce was originally set to direct, but he dropped the project because it was “too close to other films he had already made”.
4. The Hollywood Reporter is...er... reporting that Dwayne Johnson will be joined by Susan Sarandon in Snitch.
“The script centers on a suburban father who is hit hard when his teenage son is sentenced to 30 years under mandatory minimum drug laws. In order to reduce his son's sentence, the father goes undercover to serve up a senior drug dealer.
In a part that was reconfigured from male to female, Sarandon will play an ambitious U.S. attorney who believes that a drug bust can help her political career.”
Ric Roman Waugh will write and direct the film, which is based on a Frontline documentary.
Man, you know you're getting old when Dwayne Johnson is playing the father of teenagers!
5. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy hasn’t yet opened in the US, but it appears that a sequel may already be on the way.
The Guardian reports that Studio Canal intends to turn the film (which has been a major hit in the UK) into a franchise, with Gary Oldman’s George Smiley taking centre stage – the character appears in numerous books by author John le Carré.
Think of it as a cardigan wearing spin on James Bond.
