There truly is nothing quite like the movie musical. More perhaps than any other genre produced in Hollywood, it is pure escapism, immersing the viewer in a world that is full of gorgeous costumes, dazzling choreography, and stirring musical numbers.

However, not all movie musicals are alike, as any connoisseur of the genre can attest. Looking at them through the lens of the various zodiac signs reveals hidden depths and meanings to these wonderful films, as well as what musical anyone might prefer.

Aries - Calamity Jane (1953)

Starring the beloved Doris Day in the title role, this musical is everything one could ask for out of a product of the 1950s. It has a vibrant story, beautiful people, and some of the best songs that Day ever performed.

It’s a perfect film for an Aries, in large part because Day is just so infectious and charming as Calamity Jane, strutting and striding her way across the screen with her signature verve and fiery energy.

Taurus - Singin’ In The Rain (1952)

It’s rather hard to imagine that dour and hardworking Taurus as a musical, a genre marked by its frivolity and careless joy. However, if Taurus would be a musical, it is this one.

In large part, this is because this film is, arguably, the apotheosis of the genre, that moment when everything, from the stars to the screenplay to the choreography, is planned down to the finest detail and put together with exquisite care.

Gemini - Cats (2019)

Cats - Jason Derulo as Rum Tum Tugger

Admittedly, the reception of this film adaptation of the hit musical was, shall we say, dismal. However, it’s zaniness and just plain strangeness is precisely what makes it a good candidate as a Gemini.

After all, this air sign is known for its rather loose connection to the world of reality, as well as its embrace of all things that are strange and quirky. That might explain why only a certain kind of person really enjoyed this movie musical.

Cancer - Rent (2005)

Rent Idina Menzel

This musical has proven to be one of the most enduring, though the film version was not as well-received as the original stage play. However, it’s a perfect candidate for the Cancer, because this film version manages to capture the vital importance of friendship.

And, of course, it is a profoundly emotional musical, and it’s only a person with a heart of stone who would be left without tears at the end.

Leo - The Greatest Showman (2017)

Any musical with a main character that thinks that they are the center of the universe is a good candidate for the Leo. This film musical, about the renowned circus owner and consummate showman P.T. Barnum, is ideal for the lion.

Hugh Jackman is almost blindingly charismatic as the title character, sweeping all before him in his efforts to build his entertainment legacy. And, like the best Leos, he is also very friendly and helpful to the misfits under his charge.

Virgo - Mary Poppins (1964)

Virgos will find much to love about this movie musical, which stars the divine Julie Andrews in the title role. They will particularly appreciate the fact that Mary Poppins is very much a Virgo herself.

She is (almost) always ruthlessly in control of everything around her, including and especially her feelings and emotions. She never leaves anything to chance, and she has a keen eye for the details in any situation.

Libra - Chicago (2002)

This film was something of a surprise hit, considering the fact that when it came out musicals seemed to be something from the past.

However, it managed to hit all the right spots, and in Libra fashion it kept all of the elements of the genre in perfect balance and harmony with one another, including the chemistry between the two leads Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Libras will also appreciate that there is even justice, of a sort, in the end.

Scorpio - Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

Johnny Depp and Helene Bonham Carter in Sweeney Todd

This one is probably obvious, for if there is any sign that would love and appreciate this film about the barber who sets out to get revenge and murders people (and then has them turned into pies), it would be the Scorpio.

This water sign has a tendency to be jealous, manipulative and, when they are crossed, incredibly vengeful, and they will take pleasure out of watching Sweeney Todd butcher his way through the film.

Sagittarius - Grease (1978)

This film musical is a bit of a throw-back, immersing the viewer in the heady and exciting atmosphere of 1950s America. It’s one of those musicals that’s impossible not to like, in part because of the fiery chemistry between John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.

Sagittariuses will find themselves particularly attracted to the way that the music really does help to capture and express the passion that exists in these two young people looking for love.

Capricorn - Hedwig And The Angry Inch (2001)

Though many musicals lean toward the optimistic side, this one is a little different than others. Focusing on a young transwoman named Hedwig, it follows her as she attempts to attain success as a singer.

It’s well-known that Capricorns tend to be a little bit on the melancholy side and prone to bouts of being pessimistic, so they are very likely to enjoy this film, which has a particularly haunting and bleak ending.

Aquarius - Little Shop Of Horrors (1986)

What’s not to love about this film musical? It’s admittedly a bit strange, but that makes it perfect for the Aquarius, who can also sometimes be on the stranger side of things.

Despite its rather off-beat nature, this musical will appeal to the creative and unpredictable side of the Aquarius nature. Furthermore, the loyalty of the central character to his beloved will also appeal to the Aquarius, a sign noted for its devotion to its friends.

Pisces - A Star Is Born (2018)

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in A Star is Born, sitting close intimately playing guitar.

The central story of this film has been told three other times, twice focusing on the price of Hollywood stardom and now twice focusing on the cost of becoming a musical star.

It’s a powerful doomed romance story, and the Pisces, a sign known for its desire to wallow in misery and weeping, will find themselves drawn in. By the time that the film reaches its achingly beautiful conclusion, the Pisces will be nothing but a bundle of tears, and they’ll love every minute of it.
