New Photos From 'Priest' & 'The American'

A batch of new images have surfaced from two very different upcoming action films - namely, the comic book adaptation Priest and the George Clooney assassin thriller, The American.

Priest is based off the graphic novel of the same name by Min-Woo Hyung and stars Paul Bettany (the voice of Jarvis in the Iron Man movies) as a religious warrior named, well, Priest.  The character lives in a dystopian world where the Church rules over the last remnants of humanity left after a centuries-long war against the vampires - a battle which is anything but over.

The film is being directed by Scott Charles Stewart, who made his feature-length film directorial debut earlier this year with Legion.  That flick was an unmemorable but stylish FX-friendly horror/thriller pic that featured - among other things - an obscenity spewing, spider-grandma monster.

Judging by these new images from Priest (see below), Stewart's followup effort with his Legion star Bettany will have slick visuals and explosions aplenty.  Whether or not the feature will be a step up in terms of quality storytelling remains to be seen for now.

George Clooney will play a professional warrior (re: assassin) in his own feature, The American, which will hit theaters at the beginning of September.  The film finds Clooney's hit man from the states overseas in Italy, prepping to pull off what he hopes will be his last mission - anyone care to make a wager that events don't go quite as planned? ;-)

The film looks to be a moody thriller that is heavier on atmosphere and personal drama and less like a Jason Bourne film that stars George Clooney.  These early pics from the film (which you can check out below) indicate as much and look positively low-key in comparison to the fiery, guns-blazing images from Priest.  To each their own, I suppose.

The American will arrive in theaters in the U.S. on September 1st, 2010.

Priest will attack theaters in the U.S. on May 13th, 2011.
