Hollywood loves a good trend, whether it's making movies based on toys or adapting every teen fantasy novel under the sun. And origin movies are all the rage right now, so much so that even Buzz Lightyear is getting one.

With so many rich supporting characters in movies, some even more interesting than the protagonists, it leaves open the possibility that their origin could one day be told. There are even some characters that have even hinted at backstories that sound cinematic enough to get their own movie.

Lord Farquaad From Shrek

John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad in Shrek

There has already been one origin story to come out of the world of Shrek, which was Puss In Boots back in 2011, but there's another character who deserves the same treatment. Lord Farquaad is one of the most entertaining antagonists there is, whether it's his short height, his pageboy haircut, or his elitist behavior.

It's a shock that the character never returned after the first movie, at least not with dialogue. A movie simply depicting his youth and how he grew up would be entertaining enough, but it could also focus on why he hates fairytale characters so much.

Sofia From John Wick

Halle Berry as Sofia in John Wick Chapter 3.

The lore of the John Wick world rapidly expands with every consecutive movie, and the third entry in the series took the world to Casablanca, where there's yet another Continental hotel and another hotel owner, Sofia. Though a lot of what happens surrounding Casablanca doesn't make sense in John Wick 3, Sofia quickly became a standout character and a great new addition to the roster of supporting assassins.

Sofia has so much history and there are tons of questions surrounding her, such as how did she end up in Casablanca, and why does she owe John Wick that favor? An origin movie based on Sofia would see her with two great sidekicks, her two Belgian Malinois hounds.

Lando Calrissian From Star Wars

Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian in Solo A Star Wars Story

Lando Calrissian has long been considered the coolest character in the Star Wars franchise, even cooler than Han Solo. A younger version of Calrissian showed up in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and while the Han Solo origin movie was widely criticized, everyone praised Donald Glover's depiction of the General.

In the early days, Calrissian was a gambler, a con artist, and a playboy, which would all make for a thrilling movie. And despite Disney's track record when it comes to Star Wars origin movies, one focused on Lando could make for the best Star Wars film under the studio's supervision yet. It could even see Glover reprise his role, as he still looks so young and provided some of the most satisfying moments of Solo.

Kate From Sicario

Kate points a gun at someone

Though the follow-up, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, was a worthy sequel, it was missing a key ingredient that made the first Sicario so great. Kate was absent in the sequel, but in the original, she was the tough newbie of the seedy government task force who questioned everything.

Though she's no longer part of the world, the series could look back at the time when she was an FBI agent. Audiences got a brief glimpse of that at the beginning of Sicario, and an origins movie could see her as a rookie, rising through the ranks, until she finally meets Matt and Alejandro.

The Wet Bandits From Home Alone

The Wet Bandits hang Kevin on the kitchen wall in Home Alone

The Wet Bandits were feared criminals until they were put through the wringer by Kevin McCallister. And though "feared" might be going a little too far, they were surely still highly entertaining. Before burglarizing the entire street, Harry and Marv escaped prison, and what Home Alone fan wouldn't want to see an outrageous prison escape movie featuring the two of them?

The chemistry the two criminals have with each other could pad out a 90-minute movie full of slapstick comedy and hijinks. A Harry and Marv origin story could even be better than Home Sweet Home Alone, a movie that's earned itself many hilarious tweets and reactions after its release.

John Patrick Mason From The Rock

John Mason being debriefed on the mission in The Rock

The Rock is one of the more grounded Michael Bay-directed movies, but that isn't saying much. It sees FBI agent Goodspeed team with former SAS Captain John Patrick Mason, and Mason isn't just anybody. The character once managed to escape Alcatraz and survive, meaning that an origins story could make for another entertaining prison escape movie.

But the primary reason there should be an origin movie about the character is based on a fascinating fan theory. One Redditor's fan theory speculates that The Rock is a James Bond movie, and not just because both roles are played by Sean Connery. There are so many parallels between his final Bond film Diamonds Are Forever and The Rock that an origins movie could crossover two properties.

Morpheus From The Matrix

The Matrix Morpheus dojo Matrix 4

No movie has more unanswered questions than The Matrix, especially taking the sequels into account. But one thing specifically that never came to light in the 1999 action movie was where Morpheus actually came from. All that audiences know is that he devoted all of his life to searching for the one, but how did that come to be? How was he pulled out of The Matrix? How did he become this elder statesman of Zion? And how did he come to own the Nebuchadnezzar?

However, as there's a lot of things fans don't know about the upcoming Matrix Resurrections, it could incorporate the origin of the character. The trailer gives credence to that too, as Morpheus looks a lot younger than he did in The Matrix.

Luca Brasi From The Godfather

Luca Brasi gets choked in The Godfather

Many feel that The Godfather is as close to a perfect movie as there has ever been, but there is actually one thing that doesn't sit well with some fans. In the first movie, Luca Brasi is depicted as a bumbling idiot who gets himself killed during his first job.

But that's one of the biggest differences between The Godfather movie and book, as he's a brutal and merciless hitman, and even Vito Corleone himself was unnerved by the man. If done right, an origin story based on Luca in his prime could right the one wrong of the movie.

The Inglourious Basterds From The Inglourious Basterds

Aldo Raine and The Bear Jew threatening a Nazi in Inglourious Basterds.

It might seem weird to ask for an origin movie about a group of mercenaries when the film they're in is already named after them, but the team actually had very little screentime in the final cut. Half of the Basterds don't even have any dialogue, which is strange considering the movie is literally called Inglourious Basterds.

An origin movie could give the members of the gang screentime who didn't previously have any, and it could follow Aldo Raine commuting through France and Germany rounding them up. It would also shine a light on Aldo's mysterious scar across his neck, which was never explained in the movie.

Les Grossman From Tropic Thunder

Less Grossman on the phone in Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder is as much about the film industry as it is an Apocalypse Now parody, and one of the best-supporting characters is Les Grossman. Grossman is a foul-mouthed studio executive who casually hurls death threats at his employees and harasses his assistant.

Nothing would be better than to see Grossman climbing up the rungs from mail room assistant to studio exec in the most theatrical manner possible. There is a chance that Grossman could come off a lot like Ari Gold, the foul-mouthed studio exec in Entourage. However, Gold isn't a creep who likes to bump and grind to Ludicris's "Get Back" played by Tom Cruise, and the character would make for comedy gold if he got his own movie.
