The Motorola Razr is getting a third-generation model and new details hint at huge upgrades in multiple areas, with a key one being performance. While the first two attempts were not huge successes and couldn't match up to Samsung's foldable alternatives, Motorola's absence from the foldable smartphone scene in 2021 meant there were limited options for those who wanted to buy a clamshell foldable phone. Huawei did try to fill the gap with its P50 Pocket foldable, but it launched in late 2021 and is only available in China for now.

A major issue with the first two Motorola Razr foldable smartphones was the choice of the chipsets. Unlike other foldable smartphones that were powered by flagship chips, the Razr and Razr 5G launched with Qualcomm's mid-range Snapdragon 700 series processors. Considering the price tag of the two phones, they didn't scream premium specs like they probably should have. However, it seems like Motorola won't be making the same mistake with its third-gen model.

Some of the key specifications of the Motorola Razr 3 have been reported by XDA-Developers. According to the unnamed sources, the phone will come equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. This is Qualcomm's chipset for 2022 flagship phones and a very significant upgrade over the Snapdragon 765G inside the Razr 5G. The new processor should bring a noticeable improvement in performance, and not only over the previous models but also the competition, considering both the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Huawei P50 Pocket are powered by the less powerful Snapdragon 888.

The processor isn't the only area where Motorola is beefing up the Razr 3. It is also reported that the inner display will support a 120Hz refresh rate for faster and smoother scrolling. It will also replace the wide notch of its predecessors with a centered hole punch or a smaller notch. The screen is expected to be an AMOLED panel with Full HD resolution, and measuring 6.7-inches in size. As for cameras, the setup might consist of 50MP primary camera coupled with a 13MP ultra-wide camera, and a 32MP camera on the front.

Apart from packing a flagship chipset and a high refresh rate display, it is also possible that support for Ultra Wideband (UWB) will be included. This is a feature that has begun to appear in flagships phone lately and is a short-range wireless protocol that uses radio waves at high frequencies. Phones with UWB can be used for various purposes such as unlocking a car. If the report is correct, the upcoming Razr phone will also have NFC and be available in 6GB, 8GB, and 12GB RAM variants with 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of onboard storage. Similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 3, Motorola is planning to make its third-generation foldable Razr phone widely available, although there are no details on the expected price yet.
