Motorola has revealed that it will launch a variant of the upcoming Moto Edge X30 that will come equipped with an under-display selfie camera in two days from now. For the past couple of weeks, Motorola has revealed a fair bit of information about its next flagship offering that will arrive rocking a 144Hz OLED screen.

Slated to debut on Dec. 9 as the world's first phone with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, the phone appears to be quite a solid package. As per official teasers, the next Moto-branded offering will come equipped with a pair of 50-megapixel cameras at the back. In addition, a relatively large 5,000mAh battery will keep the lights on, and it will support an impressive 68W fast charging as well.

Motorola is continuing the trend of drip-feeding key specs. Its official Weibo account has now confirmed that its next phone will arrive armed with an under-display selfie camera. However, the hidden selfie camera technology will be exclusive to a special edition of the Moto Edge X30. On the other hand, the vanilla model has a circular cutout at the top housing a fairly powerful 60-megapixel selfie camera. However, it is unclear if Motorola will also be using the same 60-megapixel sensor for the under-display selfie camera model of the Moto Edge X30 or if it will go with a custom sensor with a lower megapixel count. Over at the back, the two 50-megapixel rear cameras will reportedly be accompanied by a 2-megapixel macro shooter. Following its official reveal on Dec. 9, the phone will go on sale starting Dec. 15 in China. And given its predecessor's regional availability status, the phone will also be making its way to western markets.

The under-display selfie camera tech is not exactly new. ZTE was the first brand to bring it on a commercially available device. The result was far from perfect, but the company eventually refined it to a healthy extent with the ZTE Axon 30 flagship that made its debut earlier this year. Xiaomi's MIX 4 also arrived rocking the technology a few months ago and appeared to have done quite an impressive job implementing it. So far, users have complained that despite doing their best, a small squarish outline of blurred pixels directly above the selfie scanner is still easily discernible and stands out.

Another issue is light transmittance, which affects the quality of selfies. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 also features an under-display selfie camera, and the results are nowhere near the quality one gets from a regular selfie snapper. It appears that Motorola is not too sure about the technology either, which is why the company is keeping it exclusive to a special edition of the Moto Edge X30. Another likely reason is that Motorola wants to keep the price of its next flagship in check to get it in the hands of more buyers.
