Motorola is planning to follow up on its premium mid-range smartphone, the Motorola Edge (2021) with a new model later this year and it is bringing some interesting new features. Motorola announced the Edge+ (2022), a few months ago as its first flagship of 2022. The $1,000 phone powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip is also Motorola's first phone with a smart stylus which has features similar to Samsung's S Pen, making it a viable alternative to the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Adding support for a smart stylus is not the only interesting thing Motorola has planned. After being absent for close to two years from the foldable smartphone segment, it is set to bring a new model that is expected to launch as the Razr 3. The new clamshell foldable will have a new design and be powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor.

The Motorola Edge (2022) on the other hand will sport a new design, one that closely resembles recent Motorola smartphones launched in 2022. As shown in images posted by Steve Hemmerstoffer (OnLeaks) via 91mobiles, the phone will keep the centered punch-hole display design of its predecessor. And while it will still have triple rear cameras, they no longer protrude as much and are now housed in a rounded rectangular module alongside a pill-shaped LED flash. Just like the 2021 model, this one also skips the audio jack. Alongside renders of the phone, the source also disclosed its specifications.

Motorola is giving the Edge (2022) a handful of upgrades, starting with the display. While it will still have FHD+ resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate, the 2022 model swaps the LCD screen for a pOLED panel. This should mean brighter colors and deeper blacks. Additionally, it is also smaller at 6.5-inches which should be good news for those who found the previous model's 6.8-inch screen too big. There is still a 32MP camera in front for selfies but the 108MP rear camera has been replaced by a 50MP sensor. The ultra-wide camera's resolution has been bumped up from 8MP to 13MP, while the third 2MP sensor is unchanged.

The Motorola Edge 2021 was powered a Snapdragon 778G processor with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of non-expandable storage. This year's edition drops the Qualcomm chipset for an unnamed MediaTek chipset. It is not yet known if it is the Dimensity 1050, MediaTek's first chip with mmWave support, or the less-powerful Dimensity 930. Motorola will also launch the phone in 6GB and 8GB RAM configurations with 128GB or 256GB of storage. The images don't show a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and considering the screen is now OLED, it is safe to assume the sensor now sits under the display.

Despite the smaller screen size, the Motorola Edge (2022) will keep the 5,000mAh battery, resulting in longer battery life. There is no mention of the charging speed, but for context, the 2021 model supports 30W fast charging. Finally, a new addition that Motorola has added to the new phone is support for a stylus. There is no slot for storing the stylus as seen on the Moto G Stylus, which means it will be a separate purchase. It is not known yet if the phone will get its own stylus or be compatible with the stylus of the Motorola Edge+ (2022), but the latter seems like the more plausible option. The Motorola Edge (2022) is expected to arrive in the third quarter of 2022, and like its predecessor, should be available in the U.S.
