A recently published patent describes an all-screen Motorola smartphone with the display wrapping completely around the device. Most recently, the Lenovo-owned company has been working on the third-generation Motorola Razr foldable smartphone. According to previous reports, the Motorola Razr 3 will come loaded with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, making it the first Razr device powered by a Snapdragon 8-series processor.

SoC aside, the display on Motorola Razr 3 is said to support a faster 120Hz refresh rate, and a punch-hole will replace the notch used on older Motorola Razr phones. To recall, the first Motorola Razr was launched in 2019, with the company releasing the Motorola Razr 5G in 2020. While there was no addition to the Razr series in 2021, the Motorola Razr 3 is expected to arrive sometime this year. The previous Motorola Razr foldable smartphones have been available globally.

The patent for an all-screen display that wraps around a smartphone was spotted by Lets Go Digital. As the publication explains, there are two patents, one which was filed in June 2020 and the other in August 2021. While the former talks about a smartphone in which the frame is surrounded by a flexible display on all four sides, the latter discusses use cases for the touch-wrapped side panels of the smartphone. Both patents refer to a smartphone with a large flexible display that stretches around the entire smartphone, covering the front, both sides, and the back panel.

All-Screen Motorola Phone With Virtual Buttons

Motorola All-Screen Display Smartphone

While traditional smartphones have physical touch buttons on both or either side, the all-screen display would replace them with virtual buttons. The device will use a gravity sensor, motion sensor, and temperature sensor to adjust the orientation of the interface and placement of the virtual buttons. The Motorola all-screen smartphone does have all the required ports, with the bottom housing a SIM slot and a USB-C port, along with a speaker and microphone. The on/off button would be placed at the top of the smartphone, along with the secondary speaker and microphone. Samsung is also working on large flexible displays, but it plans to fold them rather than wrap them around a smartphone.

Although the renders shared by Let's Go Digital have a front-facing camera that appears to be placed in a hole-punch cutout, the report does not provide much information about cameras on the smartphone, except for the hint of an under-display camera. A similar smartphone was showcased by Xiaomi as the Mi Mix Alpha in 2019. However, the device did not make it to mass production due to how difficult it was to manufacture such a large flexible display back then. Not to mention, the use cases and durability of an all-screen device have always been questionable, and the repair cost would likely be much more than that of a traditional smartphone. As is always the case with patents, Motorola might not release an all-screen device like the one described.
