Motorola has officially confirmed that its much-rumored 200-megapixel camera phone will be released later this year. Last September, Samsung upped the ante in the smartphone camera stakes by announcing the 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP1 image sensor for smartphones. Unfortunately, the South Korean company did not confirm details about the sensor's availability, nor did it reveal anything about who will launch smartphones with the new sensor. However, subsequent rumors suggested that Motorola will be one of the first companies to use the sensor in at least one of its upcoming smartphones.

Owned by Chinese tech giant Lenovo, Motorola offers decent mid-range smartphones as part of its G-series lineup, but the camera systems on those devices leave a lot to be desired. That's also somewhat true for its Edge-series premium devices, which also lack high-quality imaging options. As part of its plans to offer better imaging options to its customers, the company used Samsung's 108-megapixel image sensor in its Edge 20 Pro last year. So it's not surprising that it will now use the all-new 200-megapixel sensor in one of its upcoming offerings.

Motorola China on Monday teased its upcoming 200-megapixel camera phone on the Chinese micro-blogging site, Weibo. The teaser confirmed that the device will launch in July and, according to a Google Lens translation, will offer a "new benchmark for image experience." However, there's no further information regarding the device itself, so interested buyers will likely have to wait longer for the leaks and rumors to start flowing.

While Motorola is yet to announce anything about its upcoming 200-megapixel smartphone apart from its release time frame, online speculation suggests that it could be the long-rumored Motorola Frontier that has been leaked multiple times over the past several months. According to those rumors, it will be a flagship-grade device with a Snapdragon 8 processor and a whopping 125W fast charging. It is worth noting that Motorola has confirmed it is working on a phone with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, but it isn't immediately clear if it's the Frontier.

Meanwhile, other possible specifications for the rumored Motorola Frontier include a 6.67-inch curved, FHD+, 144Hz OLED display, up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. It is also set to ship with a 60-megapixel selfie camera, which suggests that the company will likely market the upcoming device as a high-quality camera phone more than anything else. If the rumors are even remotely accurate, the Motorola Frontier might be one of the devices to wait for this year.
