It’s always good to see Rebbeca De Mornay onscreen again – even if it’s in a film like Mother’s Day.
In this upcoming remake, the Risky Business and Hand That Rocks the Cradle starlett plays Natalie “Mother” Koffin, the matriarch of a family of murderous psychos who return to the house they used to live in looking for stashed loot. Of course, that goal is complicated by the presence of the house’s new residents and their guests; but if the hostages follow “Mother’s rules,” all should turn out well, right? (Right?)
See for yourself how bad the situation actually gets in the trailer for Mother’s Day:
Like I said at the start: It’s good to see De Mornay onscreen again, even if it’s in a role like this. She’s still a lovely lady, and one of the few who can do “crazy” so utterly convincingly. Although we’ve seen so many other variations of this archetype before (see Lena Headley in the upcoming Dredd, or De Mornay herslef in HTRTC), with the season actress headlining the film, you know that “Mother” Koffin is gong to at least be a compelling villain.
This remake (penned by newcomer Scott Milam) is taking a different approach than the 1980 original, which was basically about a family of lunatics and their mother roaming the woods picking off victims. The new heist/horror setup (which is presumably single-setting) offers opportunity for a larger cast of principal players, including Jaime King (Sin City), Shawn Ashmore (X-Men), Frank Grillo (The Grey), Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2), Patrick John Flueger (The 4400), and Warren Kole (24).
Directing duties were handled by Darren Lynn Bousman, who is best known for directing Saw II, III, and IV. Take that how you will, but at the very least, we know that Bousman has experience with horror films set in a single location (see: Saw II). With the combination of talent, and a strong lead in De Mornay, hopefully the Mother’s Day turns out better than the last year’s similar Trespass, which covered similar material.
Mother’s Day will be in theaters very briefly in the U.S. on May 4th; it will hit home video and Video On Demand services soonafter on May 8, 2012.
