A new one-sheet for Darren Aronofsky's crazy-looking psychological horror film mother! highlights a fiery yet strangely untroubled Javier Bardem. The mother! teaser trailer has now given audiences their first unnerving and bizarre glimpse of Aronofsky's latest project, which concerns a couple who whose peaceful lives are thrown into chaos thanks to a pair of uninvited house guests.

Jennifer Lawrence stars in mother! and she received the bulk of the attention in the teaser trailer - which featured the actress wandering around a house looking slightly dazed, while spectral voices hinted at horrific off-screen action. Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson and Kristen Wiig also star in the mysterious film.

A new poster image shared by director Darren Aronofsky adds to the mother! mystery, while also highlighting Lawrence's co-star Bardem. In the shot, Bardem sits in a chair staring blankly in the general direction of his cupped hand while holding a reflective globe in his other hand. The fact that Bardem appears to be on fire, and that hellish flames with ghost-faces embedded in them are swirling all around him, doesn't appear to faze the character.

The shot has elements in common with a previous poster image showing Lawrence serenely holding her own heart in her hand, after having apparently torn it out of her own body. The juxtaposition of untroubled characters and chaotic and distressing elements in these poster images is provocative to say the least. The teaser trailer plays around with similar ideas, though Lawrence doesn't look exactly serene as she walks around the empty house looking for someone (or something). Interestingly, the teaser trailer also contains a brief shot of someone walking into flames, an image echoed in the new Bardem poster. The teaser also briefly shows Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer having sex and one wonders if that element of the film will also get its own poster (because who doesn't want a shot of Ed Harris making it with Michelle Pfeiffer to cherish forever).

We can only guess at this point what mother! is actually about, but considering Aronofsky's fascination with psychological disintegration in films like Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan, we can safely guess that in some way the new film deals with a character or characters who are in an extreme state of mental distress and begin unraveling. The few small teasers we've seen definitely reinforce the idea that the movie will explore some very dark and strange psychological ground, which is exactly what one would expect from Aronofsky.
