Modern CGI can bring almost anything a filmmaker can imaginable to life, allowing for endless creative possibilities. However, CGI isn't the be-all and end-all, and often the best visual results can be achieved by instead poping an actor into a physical suit.

The only downside is depending on the film these costumes can be massive and heavy, making for a not so fun time on set. And can even push some actors to breaking point, causing them both physical and psychological harm With this in mind here are the ten most uncomfortable costumes actors had to wear.

Captain America (The Avengers)

Captain America The First Avenger

By no means, the biggest or most clunky costume, in fact by superhero standards the Captain America suit Chris Evans donned for the first Avengers movie is pretty standard. The major problem with the costume is the form-fitting helmet that completes the ensemble.

The helmets tight-fitting design gave Chris headaches over the duration of the shoot. Also taking into account the pain caused seems even more unjust given the fact that this is by far the worst looking Captain America costume.

Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer 1 - En Sabah Nur

2016's X-Men: Apocalypse remains one of the franchise's worst and most bloated movies. With the titular villain, Apocalypse not only being a two-dimensional cartoon villain but also looking pretty dumb. More '90s Power Rangers than blockbuster big bad.

The suit was massive and hard to put on, weighing about 40 pounds and even had a built-in cooling mechanism. But getting it off was even worse, with the only method of removing it being to scape it off his skin. Yikes.

Catwoman

Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman in Batman Returns

The iconic tight-fitting suit Michelle Pfeiffer wore in Batman Returns was just about as uncomfortable as it looks. The suit was so tight she wasn't able to get into it on her own, needing to be powdered down, helped in, and then vacuum sealed inside.

The mask too was tight and made her experience uncomfortable. Thankfully her iconic portrayal of Catwoman still remains the character's best interpretation, so maybe it was worth it?

Vision

Paul Bettany as Vision in Avengers Age of Ultron

Paul Bettany had a pretty cushy gig voicing Iron Man's A.I Jarvis through the trilogy, but that all changed when he was transformed into The Vision. And he was now required to leave the recoding booth and spend hours in the make-up chair.

The make-up took two hours to apply each day but thankfully was easily ripped off. Unlike so many prosthetics it also still allowed the actor to emote and didn't hinder his performance.

Mystique

Rebecca Romjin as Mystique in X-Men.

Rebecca Romijn went through one of the most radical transformations an actor can make and she was quite literally painted from head to toe into the blue mutant Mystique. The elaborate and impressive make-up took between 8 and 9 nine hours to apply during the first X-Men movie back in 2000.

The process was made even more uncomfortable due to the yellow eye contacts she was obliged to wear. Jenifer Lawrence has since taken over the role and spends more time looking like herself, and we can't say we blame her.

Hellboy

Ron Pearlman is no stranger to uncomfortable costumes. Before he became the legendary comic book character Hellboy he played The Beast in the Beauty and Beast television series back in 1987.

But Hellboy for a whole other kettle of fish, not only was the actor painted from head to toe in bright red paint, but he also wore contact lenses, and need we mention that giant rock hand? But the results speak for themselves and Hellboy looks as though he jumped out of the comic and onto the big screen.

The Thing

The Thing Fantastic Four

There's no doubt that when Marvel reboots the franchise The Fantastic Four's Thing will be portrayed using motion capture technology, but unfortunately, that wasn't an option back in 2005.

The suit was heavy and hot, causing Michael Chiklis discomfort on set. But he was a trooper and thankful for the opportunity to play the iconic character. Having been a fan himself of The Fantastic Four since he was a child.

The Darkness

Tim Curry in Legend

Tim Curry portrayed the nightmarish monster simply known as Darkness in the 1985 fantasy epic Legend. And it required him to wear one of the most elaborate and impressive costumes ever seen.

The demonic creature sports two gigantic horns that span over three feet long, which caused Tim a great deal of pain throughout filming. These horns then had to be made lighter as the discomfort was too great. Despite the mixed reception to the film, the costume has gone down in film history as one of the greatest.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The 1990 surprise mega-hit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was filled with fun moments but behind the scenes, it proved to be one the most grueling production in the history of movie-making. And bringing the turtles to life was the biggest challenge. The turtle's suits proved to be heavy and uncomfortable, weighing in a shocking 48 pounds.

This caused some of the cast to feel claustrophobic, but they were hesitant to take off their helmets because the technology and animatronics in the suits would take around half an hour to get up and running again.

The Grinch

Grinch with a creepy smile in How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Jim Carrey delivered one of the greatest performances of his career in the 2000 big-screen adaptation of The Grinch. But the role proved to be one of his most challenging, requiring him to wear a tight-fitting costume from head to toe and to top all that off irritating contact lenses.

The make-up took around eight hours to apply and proved to be so uncomfortable that the production had to enlist the help of a CIA operative to train him on how to endure torture.
