The most recent Studio Ghibli film on the list is When Marnie Was There. The film follows a young girl named Anna who is sent to the country for health reasons. The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars but failed to make much of a box office impact in the U.S.. However, the worldwide business was much better to the tune of $34,949,567.

From Up on Poppy Hill is another more recent film from the studio and one that is probably less well-known to American audiences despite its international success. The film is set in 1963 during the preparations for the Olympic Games being held in Tokyo. It follows a group of teens trying to save their school clubhouse from demolition.

The film was directed by Gorō Miyazaki, the son of Studio Ghibli legend Hayao Miyazaki. It was another critical hit and went on to earn $61,459,425 at the box office.

The film follows the Clock family, tiny people who live in people's houses and borrow things from them to live their own tiny lives while avoiding contact with humans.

Loosely based on the novel by British author Diana Wynne Jones, Howl's Moving Castle was another collaboration between Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli and only the second film from the studio to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Set in a fictional kingdom at war, the story follows a young Sophie. After being turned into an old woman by an evil witch, Sophie meets a wizard and joins him in his fight to save the kingdom.
