Comic book stories are all about heroes and villains battling with the world’s safety at stake. However, comics are also about people. Fans need to get to know superheroes personally to care about them. These characters have friends and allies, girlfriends and boyfriends. Occasionally, the heroes often marry these romantic interests.
Often the weddings ended up disrupted by villains, but not always. Throughout comics’ history, there have been some romantic weddings that brought together two characters in love and helped fans love them even more. From the first Marvel wedding to same-sex marriages, here are the most romantic comic book weddings.
Reed Richards & Susan Storm
The first Marvel wedding was a monumental event. Marvel Comics started with The Fantastic Four, Reed Richards and Susan Storm leading the team. They didn’t take long to make it official and marry. The wedding was in 1965’s Fantastic Four Annual #3 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Everyone attended the wedding, from The X-Men to The Avengers. This might be the most important wedding in Marvel Comics. They remain married and have two children — Franklin and Valeria.
Luke Cage & Jessica Jones
Luke Cage and Jessica Jones shared time in their Marvel Netflix series. They had an even closer relationship in Marvel Comics. The two didn’t have a long-term romantic relationship. Jessica and Luke started as friends and then realized there was a flame there. Jessica ended up pregnant, so the two married. In New Avengers Annual #1 by Brian Michael Bendis and Olivier Coipel, Super-Adaptoid tried to break up the wedding. The Avengers stopped him and the couple had a romantic wedding.
Northstar & Kyle Jinadu
Northstar spent most of his Marvel Comics existence as an arrogant showboat. He was a celebrity before he was a superhero. He also never got along with others. Eventually, he found love. This was with Kyle Jinadu and the two married in Astonishing X-Men #51 by Marjorie Liu and Mike Perkins. No villains showed up, but controversy arose when Warbird refused to attend. It was a romantic wedding, however, and the first between a same-sex couple in Marvel Comics.
Cyclops & Jean Grey
If there was one couple after Reed and Sue fans wanted to see married, it was Cyclops and Jean Grey. This wedding almost didn’t happen. Jean sacrificed herself to eliminate the Dark Phoenix. Scott ended up marrying Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean Grey.
Jean returned from the dead and finally married Scott. The wedding occurred in X-Men #30 by Fabian Nicieza and Andy Kubert. It was romantic, and no one interrupted it.
Vision & Scarlet Witch
Vision and Scarlet Witch was one of Marvel’s strangest weddings. Wanda is a human. Vision is a Synthezoid, a synthetic human robot. They fell in love while working as members of The Avengers. That led to their wedding in Giant-Size Avengers #4 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
The wedding came after The Avengers fought Dormammu and Kang in the Dark Dimension. Vision helped save Scarlet Witch, leading the Synthezoid proposing to his Avengers teammate. It was a double-wedding, with Mantis and Swordsman, possessed by Cotati, getting married as well.
Storm & Black Panther
One of the most romantic weddings in Marvel Comics was when Black Panther married Storm. The two did not remain married but seem destined to be together. The wedding was in Black Panther Volume 4: #18 by Reginald Hudlin, Scot Eaton, and Kaare Andrews. King T’Challa and Ororo had a beautiful royal wedding. While it was one of the most romantic in comic book history, the marriage ended in Avengers V X-Men after Namor destroyed Wakanda.
Hulkling & Wiccan
Running to Vegas to elope doesn’t seem romantic. That is a misnomer concerning Hulkling and Wiccan. There was a war ongoing in Marvel Comics. The two fell in love as Young Avengers, and fans wanted it to work. A war raged with the Cotati, humans, Skrulls, and Kree in Empyre.
Hulkling, the son of a Skrull and Kree, ended up as emperor. Before he left to lead the battle, he married Wiccan. in Empyre #5 by Al Ewing, Dan Slott, and Valerio Schiti, they went to Las Vegas, but their Young Avengers teammates showed up to meet them for a very romantic wedding.
Apollo & Midnighter
Though Northstar and Kyle Jinadu was the first same-sex marriage in Marvel Comics, it was not the first in comics. The first same-sex marriage in comics was Apollo and Midnighter a decade earlier. This took place in The Authority #29 by Mark Millar and Gary Erskine.
These characters were WildStorm versions of Superman and Batman-styled characters. This series, deconstructing superheroes, ended with The Authority choosing to let the world deal with its own problems. The series ended with the wedding.
Superman & Lois Lane
Superman has been around longer than anyone in comics. He debuted in 1939. Lois Lane was always his biggest supporting character. In 1978, Superman and Lois Lane married in Action Comics #484 by Cary Bates and Curt Swan. However, there was a bigger and more romantic wedding after Crisis on Infinite Earths rebooted the DC Universe. In Superman: The Wedding Album by Dan Jurgens and multiple artists, Superman and Lois Lane had a romantic wedding.
Spider-Man & Mary Jane Watson
In the start, Peter Parker loved Gwen Stacy. When Gwen died, Peter started dating Mary Jane Watson. Today, Spider-Man and Mary Jane are the true soulmates, and always were. Their relationship was so perfect, Mephisto wanting to end it. The wedding occurred in Amazing Spider-Man Giant-Sized Annual #21 by David Michelinie, James Shooter, and Paul Ryan. Peter seemed unsure of life after their wedding. However, the romantic wedding ended with Mary Jane saying they would live “happily ever after.”
