50 First Dates

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore in 50 First Dates

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are a good couple for romantic comedies, that's why they have worked together on a few movies of the genre. In 50 First Dates Henry Roth, Sandler's character, must make Lucy (Barrymore) fall in love every day. She has anterograde amnesia after an accident, which does not allow her to retain new memories in her long-term memory.

The memory condition causes funny moments and some complications for a couple who wants to start a relationship, but Henry manages to make Lucy understand his situation every morning, and she, although doesn't remember him, starts painting his face on a regular way, while singing the song Wouldn't It Be Nice.

Just like Heaven

David and Elizabeth looking confused in Just Like Heaven

A crazy situation begins when David (Mark Ruffalo) moves into a new apartment and there Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon) appears claiming that this is her home. The stability and calm that the landscape architect has in the apartment is lost, and he decides to investigate what happens to the girl who keeps disappearing and appearing in every corner.

The romantic comedy is based on a novel by French writer Marc Levy. There, a unique relationship is presented, forged after a rather strange and confusing interaction for the characters. David and Elizabeth can't avoid falling in love without knowing if their plans will work out.

The film, starring Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany, talks about the triumphs and failures, where in a few minutes everything can be defined, no matter how many years of training they took to reach that moment. Thus, Lizzie and Peter have to choose between falling in love or making the dream they have worked so hard for come true.

Pretty Woman

This film is now 30 years old, and has managed to unite generations in a story that, according to its creators, is a mixture of various fairy tales. Julia Roberts and Richard Gere meet up in one of the most successful films in the history of cinema, which made both of them stand out among the most renowned actors in the world.

Pretty Woman owes its name to Roy Orbison's song, originally it was going to be called 3,000 (for the money that Roberts' character would earn), but a wise decision made the film and the music unite forever in the memory of the audience. The script was also going to be very different, but after several rewrites one of the most rewatchable love stories of all time was created.

The Princess Bride

The film is based on a book by William Goldman, who compiled the work of Simon Morgenstern. The Princess Bride almost got adapted several times, but it was in 1987 when director Rob Reiner brought this story of fantasy, romance and comedy to the big screen, starring Cary Elwes and Robin Wright.

The cult film includes one of the best sword duels in cinema, and it is an aspect much remembered by fans. In the series How I Met Your Mother, Ted and Marshall fight with swords in a few episodes, reliving the famous scene from the movie as they say "Hello, my name is Iñigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die." These characters are probably the type who watch The Princess Bride over and over again when they find it on TV.

Bridget Jones's Diary

Bridget Jones Diary Renee Zellweger

This film is an adaptation of the book of the same name by the writer Helen Fielding, who has clarified that the story is based on Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Moreover, Mark Darcy's character is based on the main character of Austen's novel, and the physical description is of Colin Firth, who had played that role in the BBC series and, interestingly, later took the protagonist in Bridget Jones's Diary.

The adventures and misadventures of the single woman in her thirties (played by Renee Zellweger) always engage and entertain people. The romantic comedy with which many identify with speaks hilariously of loneliness, weight issues, friendship, work, relationships with parents, and especially of true love, which Bridget is unable to control.

Easy A

Easy A Emma Stone

Partially inspired by the book The Scarlet Letter, Easy A is a romantic comedy with witty dialogue and excellent performances by Emma Stone, Patricia Clarkson, Penn Badgley, Stanley Tucci and Lisa Kudrow. The film makes reference to other famous productions of the 80s, such as The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Sixteen Candles, when the protagonist demands that she also wants a great romantic scene as in these stories.

The film uses technology to tell a modern story about the complications in the world of teenagers. In addition, it carries an accurate critique of social intolerance and the ability of rumors to overreach, which can help exalt or ruin a person's reputation.

Clueless

Clueless is one of the most iconic films of the genre in the 1990s. After 25 years the audience continues to watch it, as it feels current despite it's age.  It stars Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Sisto, Stacey Dash and Brittany Murphy, who joined forces in this production that worships fashion and teenage fun.

The cult film, based on Jane Austen's novel Emma, exposes the emotional problems of a group of popular, wealthy Beverly Hills teenagers. Some of the actors involved, such as Silverstone, thought the story had no substance and almost rejected the roles, but then they proved that Clueless is more than just a simple teenage film.

Crazy, Stupid, Love

It is a film that no one tires of seeing after its release in 2011, with a premium cast (Julianne Moore, Steve Carell, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling) that exudes charisma and chemistry. A funny and intelligent script, characters with depth and surprising scenes finish outlining one of the best films of the genre in the last decade.

In Crazy, Stupid, Love, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling work together as a (fictional) couple again. During this film, they share one of the funniest and most romantic moments when they revive the iconic lift scene of Dirty Dancing

Love Actually

Sam and Daniel recreate Titanic in Love Actually

This not only ranks among the best romantic comedies, but also top holiday films, so it is quite common for people to return to this movie every Christmas. The cast is amazing, certainly one of the best: Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Andrew Lincoln, and Bill Nighy star, among others.

The film combines different stories to show that love is everywhere, while creating the perfect atmosphere with great soundtrack. Love Actually teaches about the purity of first love, about the fragility of a relationship, that love can happen without words, that some great loves never started, that your best friend can be your soulmate, and that one of the best declarations of love in a movie (Andrew Lincoln with signs) is not enough to keep the girl.
