Due to the endless rivalries and battles, people were forced to make tough choices all the time in order to stay alive and protect their loved ones and the things they cared about. This is evident in the critically acclaimed dramatized series Vikings

While the characters often make brave and bold decisions, some choices they made have ended up being detrimental to them and those around them. With the complete second half of the sixth and final season set to be released on December 30, 2020, on Prime Video, it's time to explore some of the baffling life choices made by the main characters so far.

Bjorn Sails Across The Mediterranian

Everyone was ambitious in the medieval ages so it was understandable for Bjorn to want to explore the Mediterranean long even before he had a ship. However, he never got the timing right.

He was forced to cancel his first trip and come back to avenge his father. And when he sailed a second time, it turned out to be a horrific tour, thanks to the brutality of Ziyadat, the powerful Mohameddan warlord of Ifriqiya. Ziyadat even served him human flesh. The worst part is that in his absence, Ivar gathered a strong-enough army to conquer Kattegat.

Ragnar Disappears After His Defeat in Frankia

Even though he came out alive, Ragnar's loss in Paris at the hands of his brother hit him hard. Despite the fact that he had a responsibility to his kingdom and his family, he pulled a disappearing act.

His absence led to division within his family. The rise of the psychotic Ivar to power can partly be blamed on Ragnar. If he was present, he would have kept everyone in check. Ragnar's armies also lost trust in him. So did the people. He should have simply faced defeat with grace and restrategized.

Lagertha Murders Aslaug

Lagertha's hatred for Aslaug made sense since she slept with Ragnar when he was still married to her. However, she ought to have erased the animosity from her mind as time went by because she cheated too. Ragnar had also allowed her to live in peace with other men after their divorce.

Sadly, Lagertha still harbored hatred. Despite Aslaug leaving the throne for her, Lagertha killed her instead of simply exiling her. The murder sparked anger among Aslaug's children, specifically Ivar. Apart from his ambition, the need for revenge also fueled Ivar and led him to take the throne from Lagertha.

Rollo Aligns Himself With Jarl Borg

Rollo always hated his brother Ragnar but he should have been smart enough to not show it openly. When Jarl Borg tempted him to fight with him, Rollo agreed. This way, he became Ragnar's enemy and lost the respect of the same Lagertha he was desperately in love with.

If Rollo hadn't betrayed Ragnar at that point, Ragnar could have offered him greater rewards in the future. He could have even had the chance to become heir. Sadly, the betrayal marked the beginning of their tense relationship and set off a chain of events that weren't beneficial to either of them.

Aslaug Buys Yidu

In Season 4, Aslaug examined the slaves captured in Frankia to see who she could purchase. She ended up liking Yidu because of her Asian looks hence she bought her. This turned out to be a huge mistake.

Her husband Ragnar developed feelings for Yidu and tried to sleep with her. She also made him addicted to drugs. The hallucinations that Ragnar got from the drugs influenced a number of bad decisions that would eventually lead to his demise. And when she refused to give him more drugs, he strangled her to death.

Ivar Leaves Baldur To Die

When Baldur was born with a deformity, Ivar was devasted since he wanted a healthy heir. Without telling Freydis, he took Baldur out at night and left him to be eaten by the wolves. This was a poor decision on his part, given that his own father Ragnar let him live despite being born with a deformity.

The decision eventually led to his downfall during the Siege of Kattegat. When Freydis found out what he had done, she felt betrayed. She informed Bjorn and Hvitserk's forces about a secret entrance to the city. This enabled them to defeat Ivar, forcing him into exile.

Floki Decides To Settle In Iceland

In Season 5,  Floki discovered the volcanic island of Iceland. Due to his Norse beliefs and 'relationship' with the gods, he thought he had been led to the mythical paradise known as Asgard. He thus decided to establish a settlement there.

He wrongly thought he would lead a peaceful civilization there but his people began fighting each other and he was unable to control them. He then made another mistake by traveling alone into a cave which he thought was the gate to Helheim. Instead of meeting the gods. he found a Christian cross and the cave crumbled, leading to his death.

Hvitserk Helps Ivar Ascend To Power

As a proven maestro on the battlefield, Hvitserk could have made a great ruler but he didn't want to. He was often undecided too hence he decided to back Ivar in his quest for power. This way, he promoted the rise of a tyrant.

Despite being older than Ivar and knowing how crazy the younger brother was, he still helped him ascend to power. Ivar turned out to be a selfish and cruel ruler who murdered plenty of people. If he had refused to help Ivar early enough, he could have prevented all the madness and bloodshed.

King Ecbert Picks Alfred As Heir

As soon as Ecbert met Athelstan, he became obsessed with him. He liked him because of his faith and general demeanor. He went ahead to choose Athelstan's illegitimate son over his own grandson as the heir to the kingdom. As a ruler, he ought to have known that this would trigger animosity.

Aethelwulf and Aethelred definitely deserved better than the way Ecbert treated them. When Aethelred became bitter and began scheming, it was a surprise to no one.

Ubbe Ignores Siggy

In Season 3, Ubbe developed a habit of playing with his younger brothers, Hvitserk and Sigurd. While Aslaug was away one day, Ubbe and Hvitserk went to explore a frozen lake. Siggy followed them, calling out Ubbe's name and asking them to return but he ignored her.

The worst happened and the ice on the lake broke under their weight. As Ubbe and Hvitserk plunged in, Siggy dived in to save them. She managed to rescue them. Sadly, she drowned in the lake and died. If only Ubbe had listened to her and returned, Siggy would still be alive.
