2022 looks like it will be no different, with a strong slate of movies set to be released during the year. With acclaimed filmmakers, exciting action blockbusters, and a lot of anticipated sequels, there will be great movies to look forward to for all movie fans.

Guillermo del Toro is turning to Netflix for the follow-up to his Best Picture nominated 2021 thriller Nightmare Alley. The director has been working on the project for more than a decade and is rumored to be creating a darker adaptation of the classic novel.

The film has an intriguing cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Finn Wolfhard, and Cate Blanchett alongside other Hollywood stars. The highly anticipated film will likely bring a fresh take on the story with Guillermo del Toro's notorious visual style.

White Noise

Acclaimed filmmaker Noah Baumbach is returning to Netflix after his first film with the company, 2019's Marriage Story, was a critical and cultural phenomenon. Adam Driver is once again working with the director and will star alongside Baumbach's wife Greta Gerwig.

The film is an adaptation of Don DeLillo's postmodern novel White Noise and is Baumbach's first film that is not from an original story. Delillo's absurd novel should make for a fascinating match with the filmmaker while likely being a contender for awards next year.

Slumberland

The excitement for the film likely comes from its director Francis Lawrence, who also made three of the Hunger Games films. Fans of the series can continue to get excited this year as he returns to another adapted work with Slumberland. 

Luther

Although there are no plans for another season, 2022 is set to bring a film continuation of the BBC series Luther, a show full of unexpected moments, to Netflix. The show's creator Neil Cross returned to the universe and wrote the film that is set to release this fall.

Fans will be excited for Elba's return to the role that won him many awards during the show's run. And the success of similar comebacks from other shows such as The Sopranos with The Many Saints of Newark should continue to have fans excited for the film's release.

Hustle

Adam Sandler is making yet another movie with Netflix. The upcoming basketball drama Hustle, which stars Sandler as a basketball scout, will mark the ninth time the legendary comedian will be starring in a Netflix original.

Extraction 2

Extraction 2 is one of two anticipated films involving the Russo brothers, who have seemingly entered into a partnership with Netflix. The film is a sequel to 2020's Extraction, one of Chris Hemsworth's best non-MCU roles, and both are based on the graphic novel Ciudad. 

Hemsworth is returning to star in the sequel as the Russo brothers are apparently trying to create a cinematic universe around the Extraction films (per Screen Rant). The original film was the most-watched Netflix original in history, so the excitement will likely continue for the action sequel this year.

Wendell & Wild

Wendell & Wild is another upcoming film from Netflix Animation, the new studio within Netflix that has seven films set to release in 2022 despite only releasing six total films prior. The movie is scheduled to come out in October this year.

Fans of comedy should be excited about the movie, as it is the first time that former comedy duo Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are reuniting, this time as the film's screenwriters. They are teaming up with Coraline director Henry Selick for what is one of the most exciting family films of the year.

Rian Johnson's 2019 murder mystery was a huge critical and box office hit, making more than $300 million on a $40 million budget according to Box Office Mojo, and earning a Best Original Screenplay nomination for Johnson. The sequel is set to be released sometime in late 2022.

The return of Daniel Craig as the Poirot-esque detective Benoit Blanc is highly anticipated, along with a cast full of Hollywood stars that rivals the first film. Netflix reportedly paid $469 million in an intense bidding war for the film (per Screen Rant), so the excitement will likely only continue to grow.

The Gray Man

The Gray Man is the upcoming film directed by the Russo brothers following their 2020 film Cherry and their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie's $200 million budget makes it the most expensive film in Netflix history according to IndieWire.

But perhaps more exciting is the return of Hollywood superstar Ryan Gosling, who is set to star after not appearing in a movie for almost five years. Gosling plays a former CIA mercenary on the run, with Chris Evans cast in the role of his former partner on the hunt to catch him.
