2023 is shaping up to be yet another great year for gaming, with lots of highly-anticipated releases finally making their debut. There's already a slew of both AAA and indie games set to launch this year, with plenty more surprise announcements likely to be revealed as the months go by. While The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is already primed to take 2023 by storm, we can also expect to hear more on upcoming titles we know little about, like IO Interactive's mysterious James Bond game.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, launching in May, is already a front-runner for Game of the Year 2023, while Skyrim-in-space, Starfield, should also be landing on storefronts before the year is out. Street Fighter 6, Hogwarts Legacy, and - of course - Marvel's Spider-Man 2, are also set to make this year extra special as some of the most highly-anticipated games of 2023. As well as AAA releases, the indie scene is also set for an exciting year, with titles like Broken Roads and Cassette Beasts already making waves. There's even the potential for new consoles this year, with rumors of a Nintendo Switch Pro and a newer model of PS5 as rife as ever.

With so many upcoming games to look forward to, it's hard to pick just one game to crown the Most Anticipated of 2023. As such, the Screen Rant gaming editors have come together to each share what they're most eager to get their hands on this year. From PC to Nintendo Switch, here's every game Screen Rant can't wait for in 2023.

Lara's Most-Anticipated Game Of 2023 - Resident Evil 4 Remake

Resident Evil 4 Remake: Leon S. Kennedy, frowning, aims a gun slightly to the left of the viewer

Selected by Lara Jackson, Screen Rant's Lead Gaming Editor.

Zelda may be one of my all-time favorite series, but Tears of the Kingdom comes second to the upcoming Resident Evil 4 Remake as my most anticipated game of 2023. Resident Evil 4 is the first horror (or horror-adjacent) game I ever played, and is partially responsible for turning me into the horror fanatic I am today. The reimagined adventure of Leon S. Kennedy and Ashley Graham looks like everything I'd want from a remake, with Chainsaw Man and new-look Ganados set to ramp up the terror. If Capcom's previous Resident Evil remakes are anything to go by, we should be in for a treat.

Austin's Most-Anticipated Game Of 2023 - Final Fantasy XVI

Selected by Austin King, Screen Rant Lead Features Editor

Final Fantasy 16 already looks like my ideal blend of FFXIV and Ivalice games. A high fantasy setting, warring kingdoms, Eikons fighting in kaiju battles - where do I sign up! I’m not quite sold on FF16's combat, as seen in trailers, but I trust Yoshi-P and the team at Creative Business Unit III. The more fantasy-leaning JRPGs have always been my favorites, and I can’t wait to see what FF16’s world and story have in store. It’s been a while since I’ve truly fallen in love with a Final Fantasy game, so I’m hoping FF16 recaptures that feeling. Between this and Trails From Reverie, this summer is already shaping up to be a great one for JRPGs.

Cody's Most-Anticipated Game Of 2023 - Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

FF7 Rebirth: Cloud and Sephiroth facing away from the camera, into a sea of dark trees and sunshine.

Selected by Cody Gravelle, Screen Rant Reviews Editor

FF7 Remake was by far my favorite game of 2020, an incredible blend of stylish, familiar aesthetic and the bold vision to dramatically alter a story that's beloved by millions. Now it's time to see if the sequel can make good on the promise of FF7 Remake's ending. The shock and awe of the restructured narrative is now a definitive element of Rebirth - can it recapture that sense of wonder when people know what to expect going in? I can't wait to see, and I fully trust this talented development team to deliver.

Ewan's Most-Anticipated Game Of 2023 - Marvel's Spider-Man 2

If we knew for sure that Hellboy: Web of Wyrd would be dropping in 2023, then there would be no contest for it as my most anticipated game of the year. Mike Mignola’s Hellboy is my favorite comic book series of all time, and I’ve been asking for a new Hellboy and BPRD game ever since 2008's disappointing Science of Evil. For its part, the recently-announced Hellboy: Web of Wyrd looks as if it’s reached into my brain and pulled out the exact picture of what my ideal game based on Dark Horse’s pancake-chomping occult specialist would look like, and I cannot wait to (hopefully) go drinking with some skeletons and clobber some ghouls when it eventually releases.

However, with Web of Wyrd’s release date still undetermined, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is my most anticipated game of 2023. Despite being pretty burned out on Marvel over the last several years, Insomniac’s depiction of the mythos in the Peter Parker-led Marvel’s Spider-Man and its Miles Morales spinoff has stood out as a major breath of fresh air. With the chance to expand the open-world of the past two games and put the power of PS5 to full use, I’m very much looking forward to seeing how Insomniac’s web-slingers have evolved when Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 releases this fall.

Kyle's Most-Anticipated Game Of 2023 - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Selected by Kyle Gratton, Screen Rant Features Editor

In a year that will finally fulfill my long-held dream of playing a Bethesda RPG set in space, my most anticipated game is actually The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Not only is Zelda foundational to my own gaming experience, but Breath of the Wild is a seminal release that has had a positive impact on open-world games at large. TOTK could offer only the slightest changes to BOTW and I would be content to spend hundreds more hours in Hyrule, but Nintendo’s focus on innovation has me confident that even this direct sequel will be unique.

Tash's Most-Anticipated Game Of 2023 - Resident Evil 4 Remake

Selected by Tash Martell, Screen Rant Features Editor

My most anticipated game of the year is Resident Evil 4 Remake. After the updates made to Resident Evil 2 with improved mechanics and story changes, I’m excited to see how Capcom improves and changes Resident Evil 4 for a modern audience. The original is considered one of the greatest games of all time and really evolved the third-person shooter, but it also changed the series to be more about action than the more classic horror elements of the first three games.

From gameplay trailers, this looks to be something they’re changing in the remake, reintroducing those more atmospheric horror-filled moments, which means it could be a great hybrid of both the classic series and the more action-oriented elements of Resident Evil 4 and 5. If Capcom successfully balances the two, Resident Evil 4 Remake could end up being just as influential as the original game.

Akshay's Most-Anticipated Game Of 2023- Starfield

A background of space leaning blue to yellow. In the center, a spaceship hurtles forward in lightspeed, jets blazing.

Selected by Akshay Bhalla, Screen Rant Guides Editor

Bethesda is known for making large and complex open-world RPGs, and if Starfield is anything like Skyrim, we could have a potential GOTY contender for 2023. However, while I do have my hopes high, I am still concerned about the 1,000 planets that might serve as filler content like the early days of No Man’s Sky, or the myriad of bugs players might encounter at launch.

Nevertheless, the fact that Starfield will let players customize ships, the crew, and even bases across multiple planets, gives us a hint at the sheer scale of the game. With returning marquee features such as detailed skill trees, extensive crafting, a comprehensive dialogue/persuasion system, and support for community mods, Starfield might just give The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom some tough competition in 2023.

Chris' Most-Anticipated Game Of 2023 - Hitman: Freelancer

Hitman: Freelancer's Agent 47 looks out on a rainy cityscape.

Selected by Chris Teuton, Screen Rant Updates Writer

Hitman 3 recently became Hitman: World of Assassination, and on January 26, 2023, Hitman: Freelancer will be available for free for everyone who owns the base game. If you haven't checked out Screen Rant's preview of Hitman: Freelancer's gameplay, trust me when I say that this is the best Hitman experience I've had in my life. With a combination of roguelike and base-building elements, Hitman: Freelancer merges together everything IO Interactive has spent the last eight years perfecting. It's a testament to the company's skill that somehow these maps I've spent literally hundreds of hours in can still deliver unique and fresh experiences, and I am looking forward to playing Hitman: Freelancer for the foreseeable future once it releases later this month.
