2021 was a year full of blockbusters, and Reddit users have been quick to flock to the website and discuss their distaste for some of the most talked-about films of the year.

Most of these movies aren't exactly critically acclaimed, and in some cases, they're far from it, but they are all total audience-pleasers and have become so popular amongst general audiences. Between a couple of Ryan Reynolds-led action flicks, several MCU movies, and Daniel Craig's swan song as James Bond, several Redditors reckon the year has been full of overrated movies.

Free Guy

Some Redditors think that Deadpool ruined Ryan Reynolds's career, as he has essentially played the same dry-witted, pop-culture referencing character in every movie since. But that's all part of the actor's appeal, and the pop culture references appear in almost every frame of Free Guy.

But the references didn't exactly "woo" This_neverworks, who believes that "Ryan Reynolds and the other actors goofing around are painfully unfunny." The Redditor will have to gear up, as the movie was such a huge success that Disney wants a Free Guy 2. And given all of Disney's IPs at the potential sequel's disposal, there are an endless amount of references and Easter egg possibilities.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings

After the tepid response to Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, was the first MCU movie after the COVID-19 pandemic to get almost every single Marvel fan overwhelmingly excited. However, TV_series72 is one of the very few who think the movie is overrated.

The Redditor claims that, "by [Marvel] standards, it was below average." Though most MCU origin movies all follow a similar formula, Shang-Chi is more unique, and the martial arts sequences haven't been seen in an MCU movie before. Not only that, but fans are already debating over who could appear in the Shang-Chi sequel.

Zack Snyder's Justice League

It's no surprise that Zack Snyder's Justice League is so beloved by the fans, as it was those very fans who managed to get the movie into production after an incredibly impassioned Twitter campaign. The film fixes so many of the 2017 movie's problems, whether it's the color correction or the character designs.

Though this Redditor does admit that the 2021 movie is superior to the 2017 theatrical release, they also say that it "has its own issues, and while it is decent, isn’t everything people hype it up to be." The Redditor does have a point, as the film closes up some plot holes, but it opens others. But at the end of the day, the four-hour superhero epic is the best HBO Max exclusive movie for a reason.

The Suicide Squad

There is a significant difference in quality between 2016's Suicide Squad and the newly released sequel. The Suicide Squad built on the original characters, it introduced fan-favorite new ones, and it gave them all compelling story arcs that are surprisingly heartfelt.

Scary_Understanding2 never understood the hype, believing that "DC fans have their expectations set so low that this is somehow considered a legendary movie." But it was a good year to be a DC Extended Universe fan, and though the quality of DCEU movies has been inconsistent, to say the least, the universe really hit its stride in 2021.

Nobody

Not a year goes by without a John Wick-influenced gun-fu action flick, and in 2021, Nobody was that token movie. Nobody is so like John Wick with its actions, storyline, and even the cinematography is similar, but that doesn't make it any less entertaining.

A deleted user doesn't agree with the general consensus, saying that, "The story really isn't anything that special, the villain sucks, and there are just three action sequences." But though there might only be three action sequences, they are extremely long sequences that transition from one scene to the next. And it isn't only the action that's the big appeal of the movie, but the brilliant dialogue and hilarious one-liners too.

No Time To Die

No Time to Die is as close to perfect of an end for Daniel Craig's James Bond as there could have been. And for as serious as Craig's Bond can be, there's a surprising amount of jokes in the movie, and they all land well too.

But amongst several criticisms the Redditor has of the movie, Xcalibrated argues that they "could even hear forced laughter in the cinema." The film has a perfect balance of laughs, drama, and action, but it's also the least Bond-like 007 movie there has ever been, so it isn't completely surprising if it isn't a hit with some Bond fans.

Godzilla Vs. Kong

Godzilla and Kong's first battle in Godzilla vs. Kong

While it wasn't exactly beloved by critics, Godzilla vs. Kong is one of the highest-grossing movies of 2021, meaning that it was a huge hit with general audiences. Fans had been waiting to see the big monsters fight on the big screen for a long time, and it paid off, as they got exactly what they wanted.

However, EenyEditor is getting sick of these kinds of blockbuster movies. Speaking of the 2021 movie, the Redditor argues that the "whole plot is derived from a forced narrative," as everybody is expected to assume that two monsters would fight each other.

Red Notice

There are loads of great movie duos with Dwayne Johnson, and it's becoming a trend for him to team up with other bankable stars. Red Notice is the latest example of that, as he and Ryan Reynolds have a reluctant buddy-cop-like relationship. And though not critically acclaimed, the film is an absolute audience-pleasing adventure movie.

kattahn slams absolutely everything about the 2021 film, arguing that "every aspect of it was bland. The one-liners felt inorganic, the cinematography was boring. It was all so disappointing." But just like Free Guy, Red Notice is another Reynolds movie that made huge numbers for Netflix, and there are now two sequels in the works.

Dune

Of all the movies that Redditors think are overrated, Dune is the most appropriate to receive the label. That isn't because the film is bad, but because it had such an overwhelmingly positive reception. It might be the most positively received movie by both fans and critics, but Dostm doesn't stand in line with the consensus.

The Reddit user argues that Dune had no substance, saying, "let’s hint at a potentially interesting idea or interaction, throw in some cool visuals and an epic score, then, that’s enough." While the movie does feel like it's setting up the sequel more than anything, Dune is soaked in so much fascinating lore and spends a ton of time building the world. And it looks great too.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

It's almost certainly going to change because there are millions of people who have still yet to see it, but Spider-Man: No Way Home has 9.0 on IMDb and is the eighth-best movie of all time according to the movie database. It also has an incredible 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, but there are still some Redditors who are far from satisfied.

ControversialOpinions wasn't satisfied by the heaps of fan service and the seemingly non-stop surprises. In response, another Redditor agrees and claims that all MCU movies are the same, but those who have seen it know that there's nothing quite like No Way Home.
