Who Will Be The Next Mortal Kombat X Characters?

Mortal Kombat X Sub Zero

Fighting game series Mortal Kombat has been around for well over two decades and isn't showing any signs of losing popularity, with this year's release Mortal Kombat X still holding the top spot as the best-selling game of 2015 so far. The initial season pass bundle included a DLC called "Kombat Pack", which has so far added four additional characters and many additional character skins and costumes to the game.

Mortal Kombat X developer NetherRealm Studios isn’t finished with Mortal Kombat X yet, however. The developer just announced another DLC bundle called “Kombat Pack 2", which will feature four new additions to Mortal Kombat X’s ever-growing roster of body-desecrating, inter-dimensional warriors. Part of what makes this particularly fun is that the new additions aren't restricted to classic Mortal Kombat characters, but could come from entirely different properties.

The four new characters (who will join previous DLC Kombatants Jason Voorhees, Predator, Tanya, and Tremor) are set for release in the first half of 2016. NetherRealm hasn’t yet revealed their identities, but studio head Ed Boon - whose history with the series dates back to when people played Mortal Kombat with inserted quarters in public places - has laid out a few clues on his Twitter page. The most compelling of these is a smoke-enshrouded image of the new characters that has the MKX community buzzing.

Here is the official announcement of new downloadable content coming for Mortal Kombat X.

What follows are our best guesses for the four smoke-enshrouded figures, from left to right.

Figure 1: Baraka

We think the first figure from the left is cult favorite/recurring punchline Baraka. Why do we think this? For starters, it looks like Baraka. But also, even though Baraka wasn’t a playable character at Mortal Kombat X’s launch, he was a minor character in the game’s Story Mode and had what appeared to be a full set of moves and animations. Some gamers even found a way to jailbreak Baraka and play as him to their heart’s content. Since the game’s launch, NetherRealm has had a head start on his development as a possible DLC down the stretch.

Other guesses: Noob Saibot, Rain, or one of the other ninjas

Figure 2: The Joker

When a fan recently suggested to Ed Boon that a Marvel character was one of the four, he replied, “You lost me at Marvel.” Given this tweet and NetherRealm’s history with the Injustice franchise, we think that at least one of these characters is a DC Comics character. NetherRealm already put a lot of time into a Joker-style character in Mortal Kombat X’s Erron Black, who plays like a more polished version of Injustice’s Clown Prince of Crime. And look at that silhouette—who else has that hair?

Other guesses: Sindel, Elvira

The Joker in Batman Arkham Knight

Figure 3: Cyrax, Smoke, or Sektor

We think the third figure is definitely one of the classic Mortal Kombat cyborgs, though we’re not sure which one. One of these guys would add to the game’s “Mortal Kombat retrospective” feel, and NetherRealm may have done the legwork for a cyborg character in the form of their previous DLC character, the Predator. Who doesn’t remember playing as Cyrax in the 90s and thinking 'Predator'?

Other guesses: Kabal, Kylo Ren

Figure 4: Bo’ Rai Cho

The fourth silhouette looks a lot like the version of Bo’ Rai Cho, who had a cameo in Mortal Kombat X’s Story Mode. Using the logic we've employed to guess the other three characters, we think there’s a solid chance that the Drunken Fist style is set to return.

Other guesses: Indiana Jones, Neo

That's it for our guesses, but let us know who you think these mysterious figures might be in the comments.

Mortal Kombat X is available now for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. "Kombat Pack 2" will hit digital marketplaces in the first half of 2016. In addition to the figures lurking in the smoke, "Kombat Pack 2" will also include new character skins and a new environment.
