Joe Taslim will be seen as Sub-Zero in the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot, and he's been a part of some amazing action movies. A native of Indonesia, Taslim began training in martial arts as a child, and has studied numerous disciplines such as Tae Kwon Do, Wushu, and Judo. Taslim would go onto to become a Judo champion, and would subsequently take his skills to the big screen.

For Mortal Kombat, Taslim portrays Bi-Han, a Lin Kuei assassin who later becomes the supernatural warrior Sub-Zero, with the power to project ice and freeze his enemies in battle. Some information made available about the movie indicates that it will kick off with a big fight sequence between Sub-Zero and his sworn enemy Scorpion, while the synopsis positions him as pursuing Lewis Tan's Cole Young, hinting that Sub-Zero could be in a fairly central role to the movie's story.

Having appeared in a couple of movies before, Taslim's first big break in action movies came in 2012's The Raid: Redemption as the Jakarta police sergeant Jaka, with the movie becoming an instant action classic, with Taslim going head-to-head against Yayan Ruhian's Mad Dog. Taslim was seen the following year in Fast & Furious 6 in the role of Jah, one of the associates of Luke Evans Owen Shaw, taking on Han and Roman single-handedly in one of the movie's major fight scenes. Taslim's next big role came in 2016's Star Trek Beyond in the role of Manas. Meanwhile some of his best work would lie just ahead.

Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat

Taslim rejoined his co-star from The Raid Iko Uwais for Tim Tjahjanto's 2018 action film The Night Comes For Us, with Taslim portraying the reformed criminal Arian, and the movie itself being one of the harshest, most brutal martial arts films of the 21st century, and perhaps ever. While Taslim had been in supporting or villainous roles before, The Night Comes For Us was the first real showcase of his capabilities as a leading man, the film's dark story and incredibly ferocious action scenes really allowing Taslim to shine (and poised for a spin-off devoted to Julie Estelle's Operator). Taslim later appeared in other action movies such as Hit & Run and The Swordsman, while one of the biggest highlights of Taslim's career would also come on the small screen.

Specifically, Taslim would go onto to appear on the Cinemax series Warrior, based upon a concept originally created by Bruce Lee. Taslim portrays Li Yong, an enforcer for San Francisco's Long Zii gang, with the show alternately making him both an enemy and at times an ally of the main protagonist Ah Sahm, played by Andrew Koji. Cinemax putting a halt to original programming has left Warrior's future up in the air after 2 seasons, but it could possibly continue on HBO Max, with Taslim likely returning as Li Yong.

Fans will have to wait and see what Joe Taslim brings to table as Sub-Zero when the film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on April 16th, but having The Raid, Fast & Furious 6, The Night Comes For Us, and Warrior on his resume, he's already shown that he was anything but miscast for the Mortal Kombat movie reboot.
