The producer of the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot promises to do justice to Sub Zero and Scorpion. The Mortal Kombat series started off as an arcade game in 1992 and quickly grew to become one of the most well-known video game franchises around. A few years after the first game's release, New Line Cinema attempted to adapt the games for two feature-length films, which didn't go over well with fans and critics. Now, Warner Bros. is rebooting the franchise.
The Mortal Kombat reboot has been stuck in development hell for quite some time, but fans started to see more progress once James Wan signed on as a producer. From the very beginning, Wan assured fans that they weren't going to rush the movie in order to make sure it was done right. Fans were thrilled to hear last year that the Mortal Kombat movie would not only be R-rated but also include game accurate fatalities. Mortal Kombat wrapped filming in December, and now the producer of the film is once again reassuring fans.
Producer Todd Garner recently promised fans on Twitter that the reboot would effectively utilize Sub Zero and Scorpion, unlike the '90s Mortal Kombat movies. Garner even hinted at possible game moves and fatalities that would be in the movie by cleverly responding to a fan saying, "Well they aren't dancing." The producer also revealed that the film wouldn't completely rely on CGI since the film scored some talented martial artists for its cast. Garner's tweets can be read below:
Fans have been continually updated on the production of Mortal Kombat, including several casting announcements. The first character to be cast was Sub Zero, who will be played by Joe Taslim, a martial artist who was on Indonesia's national judo team for twelve years. Scorpion will be played by Hiroyuki Sanada, who is known for films like The Twilight Samurai and the 2007 film Sunshine. Several more popular characters have also been cast, including Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Kano (Josh Lawson), Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), Mileena (Sisi Stringer), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), and Shang Tsung (Chin Han).
With as hated as the two Mortal Kombat films from the '90s are, it makes sense that everyone involved with the reboot feels the need to reassure fans that their film will be different. The first Mortal Kombat trailer is expecting to drop this Summer, which will be the first thing to really give fans a feel for what the movie will be like. Video game movies have a reputation for not turning out, so fans are no doubt hoping that Mortal Kombat will be a change of pace for the genre.
