The release date for the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot movie has moved up a few months, now coming to theaters in January of 2021 instead of March. Based on the immensely popular fighting video game of the same name, Mortal Kombat is the first non-horror film to be produced by Atomic Monster Productions, a company best known for their multiple films based in The Conjuring universe.

Having recently released its eleventh main entry earlier this year, the Mortal Kombat series has been one of the most controversial and well-known fighting game franchises ever since the first entry released in 1992, causing an uproar which would later influence the entire United States video games industry to create the ESRB ratings system which is still in use today. The game's popularity led to an animated Saturday morning cartoon show called Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, a mediocre film adaptation in the mid-1990's, and a sequel film which was disappointing not only to fans of the franchise but to pretty much everyone involved.

Now, Warner Brothers is rebooting the classic arcade game-based movie series, hoping to bring the bloody violence to a brand new audience, and apparently they can't even wait until the film's original release date hits to do so. As reported by Comicbook, the Mortal Kombat reboot film's release date has moved forward by nearly two months, now premiering on January 15th, 2021 instead of the previously announced March 5th.  The news of the Mortal Kombat movie's advancement came alongside numerous other Warner Brothers announcements, including a release date for the upcoming standalone Flash movie and the news that The Matrix 4 and Bill and Ted will release on the same day.

A still from the first Mortal Kombat movie.

Although details about the plot of Mortal Kombat's upcoming reboot are scares, fans do already know characters from Mortal Kombat 3 will be appearing in the film, as well as various characters from later entries in the series, including the PlayStation 2's Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance vampire Nitara. Series favorites like Sub-Zero, Shang Tsung, Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, and Scorpion are all also scheduled to appear in some fashion.

Hopefully, the new Mortal Kombat film will do justice to the series which inspired it, something which has felt lacking in many of the on-screen depictions of the Mortal Kombat franchise. While the original film was an adequate rendition of the source material, the sub-par quality of the film's sequel and subsequent lackluster attempts at spicing up the series (sans for the fan-made Mortal Kombat Legacy internet show) has only left a bad taste in many fan's mouths. Right now, viewers can only hope this push to a January release means Warner Brothers is excited to get the Mortal Kombat film in viewer's hands earlier, and not an indication they expect it to flop.
