Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid teases a brutal fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero opens the movie. The wildly popular fighting video game franchise previously got the live-action treatment in the 1990s with a short-lived franchise. Now more than two decades later, Mortal Kombat is getting another shot at the "big screen" experience, which will also include the film debuting on HBO Max in April.

With Mortal Kombat's release rapidly approaching, Warner Bros. kicked off the marketing campaign for the movie recently. The first Mortal Kombat trailer offered the best look at the R-rated, action-filled movie. By and large, fans of the video games are excited for the upcoming adaptation based on the footage. It featured great looks at the film's loaded cast, which includes some of the most popular characters from the games. This included fan-favorites like Bi-Han aka Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) and Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada).

Following the release of Mortal Kombat's trailer, director Simon McQuoid spoke with IGN to break down thrilling footage. This conversation included McQuoid teasing an epic fight between Sub-Zero and Scorpion that is momentarily seen in the trailer. He revealed that the throwdown between the legendary fighters is part of the film's opening and is a particularly nasty exchange.

It's really about seeing [Scorpion’s] evolution on the screen and the ingredients, both emotional and physical as to why he becomes Scorpion. And so that is explained across the opening of our film. And it's a pretty brutal, nasty fight.

Sub-Zero stabs Scorpion in Mortal Kombat

The fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero that opens Mortal Kombat won't exactly be what some fans might expect. The encounter is set in feudal Japan, centuries before the present-day story of the film. Scorpion does not yet have powers at this time and is known as Hanzo Hasashi. But, this sequence is also where Scorpion first crafts his signature kunai weapon. Considering Hanzo is expected to be out of commission until the modern day, it is expected that this brutal fight will conclude with Sub-Zero as the victor.

Mortal Kombat won't just feature this single fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero though. The trailers teased more fights between the pair, so it appears Scorpion will get a rematch at some point. Their multiple fights and those between other contestants featured throughout the Mortal Kombat trailer highlights how action-packed the movie will be. And with two fights between Scorpion and Sub-Zero teased so far, there's a good chance that a third will take place to show which one is truly the best fighter.
