Sure the superhuman abilities and bombastic costumes help make the characters stand out as living weapons. However, characters from the Mortal Kombat universe also wield powerful arsenal to perform deadly fatalities and special moves.

For some of these iconic weapons, they play an integral part in the character's makeup. They seem almost naked without these items due to being built right into the fighting style and special moves. Some iconic weapons might surprise some as they did not appear until later in the massive franchise.

Liu Kang's Nunchaku

For a long time, Liu Kang didn't require weapons: he had his fists and fire abilities. In later games, Liu Kang further referenced Bruce Lee by having nunchaku. They began as Liu Kang's weapon in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and Armageddon.

They did not return until Mortal Kombat 11 and its astonishingly detailed gear system. Now imbued with his fiery arcana, fans have come to accept the nunchaku as the perfect weapon for the champion of Mortal Kombat.

Sonya's Wrist Blasters

Sonya shooting her opponents in the sky in Mortal Kombat 11

Sonya Blade is one of the best MMA fighters in the world and to go along with her brawler skills, she has blasters built right into her gloves. These allow her to enhance her punches with energy, shoot bullets, and fire blasts of energy-based rings that deal nasty damage.

Sonya's energy rings have been a mainstay of the character for a long time. In Mortal Kombat 11, Sonya's wrist blasters can be customized. Jessica McNamee wields these famous pieces of Sonya's arsenal in the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie.

Kano's Cyber-Eye

Kano's outro pose in Mortal Kombat 11

Though Kano's overall design has changed over the years, the one thing that remains the same is his eye. With one glowing red-retinal and metal plating, Kano's Cyber-Eye is not only the signature par of his look but is also a weapon. It can fire red laser beams, can see through objects, and scan technology.

Its many abilities were absent from Trevor Goddard's portrayal in the 1995 movie, something that the new movie rectifies. In some versions, it shows near indestructibility such as in Mortal Kombat 11 when it can smash an opponent's skull.

Baraka's Arm Blades

Baraka crosses his blades in Mortal Kombat 11

Baraka's weapons are something he's had from birth much like other Tarkatans. Baraka's forearms each contain a blade that extends outward, becoming almost as long as the arms themselves. These blades combined with Baraka's gnarly fanged face are what made Baraka become iconic.

Baraka's blades do contain abilities such as being able to generate powerful sparks when grinding against each other. This hints that the blades are made of metal or a nearly indestructible form of bone.

Kitana's Bladed Fans

Kitana wields her bladed fans in Mortal Kombat 11

Princess Kitana is as beguiling as she is deadly and her weapons fit right into that dynamic. At first glance, Kitana appears to be nothing more than a pampered princess using fans to keep herself cool. In actuality, her Edenian martial artist combined with said fans make her a fearsome opponent.

Kitana's fans are adorned with razor-sharp blades. She can use the fans for both melee and ranged combat as well as imbue them with her magic. These weapons even defeated the legendary Shao Kahn, earning her the title of Kitana Kahn.

Shao Kahn's Wrath Hammer

Shao Kahn rests his hammer on his shoulder in Mortal Kombat 11

Speaking of the famous Emperor of Outworld, Shao Kahn almost always has his massive hammer. Since his return in Mortal Kombat 3, the Wrath Hammer has always been the thing gamers fear. The Wrath Hammer is enough to make Thor's Mjolnir shake in fear.

In games like Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat 9, Shao Kahn uses it for downright unfair attacks. One hit takes out almost a quarter of the player's health if they are not careful. It even made a quick appearance in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

Jax's Bionic Arms

Jax Charging His Arms - Mortal Kombat 11

Yes, they are his arms but they still count as weapons. Especially since Jax can crush a person's skull with one clap and use them to fire blasts at his enemies. Jax can also create powerful tremors by punching the ground, sometimes generating waves of energy.

After Jax debuted to mixed opinions, Jax upgraded to cybernetic arms in Mortal Kombat 3. Ever since then, Jax's robotic appendages have been the iconic trait of the character. Although, the lore can't seem to make up its mind as to who destroyed Jax's real arms: Goro, Ermac, Kano, or according to the new movie: Sub-Zero.

Sub-Zero's Ice Weaponry

Sub-Zero creates weapon out of ice in the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie.

With deadly cryomancy under his control, Sub-Zero doesn't have just one weapon. Both Sub-Zero brothers can forge swords, daggers, axes, spears, hammers, and any kind of weapon they can imagine. It allows him to keep up with other weapon-wielding opponents like his rival Scorpion.

The ice sword has become somewhat famous due to its use in later games including the PS2 era, Mortal Kombat X, and Mortal Kombat 11. Joe Taslim's Sub-Zero in the movie puts a heavy focus on his ice weapons. The ice weapons played an integral part of Sub-Zero's gameplay when he guest-starred in Injustice 2.

Kung Lao's Razor-Rimmed Hat

Kung Lao grazing his hat in Mortal Kombat 2021

Since his debut in Mortal Kombat II, Kung Lao has always sported a hat inspired by James Bond villain Oddjob. The hat features a razor rim which the Shaolin Monk can use to slice his enemies. Think if Oddjob's hat mixed with Captain America's shield.

From Mortal Kombat II to Mortal Kombat 11, the razor-rimmed hat has and likely always will be featured in Kung Lao's combat. And typically, some of the more visceral and gory fatalities stem from Kung Lao and his famous hat.

Scorpion's Kunai (Spear)

Scorpion throws his chained kunai in Mortal Kombat 11

Of course, the weapon most thinks of when it comes to Mortal Kombat is Scorpion's spear. The kunai is a Japanese gardening tool connected via a rope or chain depending on the game. Scorpion plunges the kunai into the opponent's chest, pulling them to him while roaring his iconic catchphrase of, "Get over here!"

The new movie actually shows the kunai as a gardening tool; unlike in the 1995 movie where it was depicted as a serpent coming out of his hand for some reason. Like Kung Lao's hat, Scorpion has never been seen without his kunai and that's unlikely to change.
