A new Mortal Kombat teaser trailer has been released, showing new action-packed footage of Sub-Zero, Kano, and more of the film’s classic fighters as the battle for Earthrealm heats up. The footage revealed so far for the upcoming live-action reboot has all the brutal fighting the video games are famous for, and that trend continues with the new trailer. Mortal Kombat is set to release in theaters and on HBO Max on April 16.

While the new Mortal Kombat includes several characters from the original arcade games like Sonya, Jax, Kano, and Mileena, the story will focus primarily on the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero and new protagonist Cole Young. Early trailers and story reveals teased that Cole may be connected to one or both of the franchise’s most iconic ninjas, sparking numerous fan theories as Mortal Kombat’s release date approaches. Whatever Cole’s role in the story ends up being, he’s sure to have plenty of competition along the way.

In a new trailer shared to the official Mortal Kombat Movie Twitter account, the fighters of Earthrealm prepare for battle against the warriors of Outworld. Cole’s teased fight against Goro is shown in slightly more detail. Plus, Kano lets loose with his iconic laser eye, Liu Kang shows off his fire magic, and Raiden preps all the assembled fighters for the war to come. Some of the scenes have been shown before, but there's a lot of new action and dialogue. Watch the trailer below.

Jax’s reference to a war coming in the new Mortal Kombat trailer suggests that the reboot, like the original arcade game and the 1995 film, will take place during a, particularly pivotal tournament. Canonically, Outworld must win ten straight victories in Mortal Kombat to earn the ability to invade Earthrealm. If the threat of invasion is as imminent as the new trailer makes it seem, the stakes for Cole and the rest of Earth’s warriors are even higher than previously known.

To that end, the new trailer focuses mainly on the Earthrealm fighters training for the battles to come. Raiden gets a few new dialogue lines, cementing him in the mentor role he’s always played in the franchise. Kano is also seen firing a laser from his right eye when previous footage saw it coming from his left. That suggests the reboot’s version of the character may have powers beyond his video game counterpart. All in all, there’s plenty of brutal action to get excited for when Mortal Kombat releases on April 16.
